BlackBerry 9700’s arranged marriage to T-Mobile leaves its mark, seen in the wild

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Sure, it’s more or less just a BlackBerry Onyx with a trackpad, but slap a T-Mobile logo on it, and the excitement is all rejuvenated. Such a device was spotted in the wild by the folks at Crackberry, sporting a silver chrome and a leather-clad battery cover. Not much to say here, but with that branding, we’re hoping it’s not long before heading into the consumer channels. Don’t worry AT&T friends, we’re sure your GSM-equipped 9700 is just around the corner, too.

[Thanks, Glenn]

A3300 proves Motorola wants to keep teasing world with its best WinMo hardware

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

For some reason that can’t fully be explained (much less understood), Motorola’s made a bad habit lately of keeping all of its best Windows Mobile hardware more or less confined to Asia. Don’t get us wrong, that’s great for Asia — but for the rest of the world, getting a SURF without going through a series of importers, middlemen, pushers, weirdos, jerks, and college students just looking to make a little extra money on the side. Looks like that trend’s gonna continue, too, with the appearance of an alleged A3300 slate featuring a nice little 5 megapixel cam out back. Little else is known about the black beauty at this point, but with Moto’s seemingly singular focus on Android going forward, you’ve got to wonder how long these WinMo one-offs will continue.

[Thanks, Antony]

Video: T-Mobile BlackBerry 8520 sold and unboxed early

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

We all know there ain’t no party like a Super Walmart party, ’cause the Super Walmart party don’t stop. Aiding its cause in being the go-to place for night owls and bargain hunting insomniacs is the fact that it’s apparently selling T-Mobile’s newest BlackBerry ahead of the August 5th street date. Don’t believe us? Jump on past the break for an unboxing video, and afterwards, feel free to call your nearest five Wally Worlds until you find one ready and willing to take your $48.88 (on contract).

[Thanks, Alex]

BlackBerry App World 1.1 unleashed, makes welcome improvements to store navigation

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

If you’ve been using your BlackBerry in the last 24 hours or so, you’ve probably noticed that red star plastered on the App World icon, signaling it’s time for an upgrade. Yes, RIM’s version of the app store has hit version 1.1, and the bulk of the update concerns better navigation options — new categories, top downloads for free and premium apps, and the ability to sort search results by name, release date, rating, price, and developer. Outside of that, we’ve also got the option to now archive apps on SD card or other memory, but unfortunately there’s no option to run those programs without reinstalling to internal memory. The update is available for all countries, including the recently-introduced group of ten. Full details after the break.

LG releases first official shots of BL40 "New Chocolate"

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

We’ve already got a pile of evidence taller than the BL40 itself that told us LG’s latest Black Label device was that ultra-wide, glossy red and black slate we’ve seen floating around — but now, for the very first time, it’s totally official. The company has just released the first fully-revealed press photos of the phone that it’s calling the “New Chocolate,” an homage to one of the phones that brought it to the dominant industry position it enjoys today. So, is the BL40 going to help it continue that dominance? At a glance here, yeah, we’d say there’s a pretty good chance.

RIM officially intros BlackBerry Curve 8520, promises "out of the box" Mac compatibility

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Sadly enough, this is pretty much par for the course with RIM. We talk about a BlackBerry for months on end, and after everyone grows acquainted with its features via less-than-official sources, the company finally confesses. At any rate, the long-awaited BlackBerry Curve 8520 (which may or may not go by Gemini on T-Mobile) has finally found a dedicated landing page on its maker’s website, and while the list of specifications aren’t a surprise, there is one thing that caught our eye. Alongside the 2 megapixel camera, video recording mode, WiFi radio, 1,150mAh battery (which is good for 4.5 hours of talk time or 17 days in standby), a fairly robust multimedia player and a 320 x 240 resolution display, RIM also promises “out of the box Mac compatibility.” Specifically, we’re told that users will be able to “sync contacts, calendars and notes” by using BlackBerry Desktop Software on Apple computers. Of course, when clicking for more information, we’re simply ported over to a page informing us that the Mac-specific version of the aforesaid platform won’t arrive until September. So, is the 8520 special, or is that August 5th ship date around 30 days off?

Update: RIM just confirmed the T-Mobile USA release date: it’s August 5th for $129.99 on a two-year agreement. Guess we’ll see just how legitimate that Mac claim is here soon, huh?

[Thanks, Marcus]

BlackBerry Desktop Manager coming to Mac in September

Monday, July 20th, 2009

Mac users, rejoice — well, the BlackBerry users in the lot of you, anyway. RIM’s been infamous over the years for all but ignoring Mac support for its devices, throwing out the occasional bone like Media Sync, but they’re now going big with a full-fledged Desktop Manager supporting Mac OS 10.5.5 and above when it launches… sometime. The big sticking point right now is that RIM isn’t talking about an availability date, all we know is that it’ll happen some time in September — but when that date comes, you’ll have a suite that’s able to sync iTunes, add and remove apps, perform firmware updates, create backups and restore from them, and manage multiple BlackBerrys at the same time. Nokia, maybe you guys want to take note here?

RIM settles with patent holder Visto to the tune of $267.5 million

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

Research in Motion hit a milestone today, only “achievement” wouldn’t necessarily be the best way to describe it. The BlackBerry maker has finally ended a long-running patent dispute with Visto Corp., paying out $267.5 million to settle the matter — a much larger fee than the $7.7 million Visto got from Seven Networks, but conversely a fraction of the reported $612.5 million RIM paid to settle with NTP years back. With it, however, comes a fully paid license to use Visto’s patents, and some of the plaintiff’s intellectual property by way of transferred ownership. So now that we can move on from that dispute, who’s next to take the mantle and vie for a piece of BlackBerry’s pie?

LG’s BL40 Black Label phone captured in the wild — alongside a kid sibling

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

The more we see of LG’s latest Black Label handset — the mysterious BL40 — the more we want to touch it, play with it, talk on it, and put it (or, at least try to put it) in our pockets. Shots of the bizarre-yet-beautiful phone have appeared over on a German forum where we’re told the interface is S-Class-based, the screen is 800 x 345, and the camera is 5 megapixels strong with Schneider Kreuznach optics — all specs that fall in line with what we’ve heard so far — and there’s also apparently WiFi, an FM transmitter, and about 335MB of free onboard storage (easily rectified with a huge microSD card, of course). What has us even more intrigued, though, is a single picture in the bunch that shows the BL40 next to a smaller, stouter device with virtually identical industrial design. We have no idea what it is, but it looks like LG might be poised to roll out a whole series of phones in this new Black Label line — and which ones are Chocolate-branded is anyone’s guess at this point.

[Thanks, Anthony]

iPhone server rack an exercise in network storage indulgence

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Here’s one way to get yourself noticed. Japanese developer FreeBit, in looking for a way to show off its Serversman iPhone app, has debuted a prototype ultra-small server rack. Perfect for when you happen to have up to five iPhones / iPod touches lying around and nothing better to do but turn them into overpriced network storage solutions — then again, if you’re rocking five of Apple’s touchscreens, there’s a good chance money isn’t your biggest concern.
