The last video we posted of the Storm 2 doing its SurePress thing has been unceremoniously pulled from YouTube, but this new video really makes up for it. It turns out the screen uses piezo electronics to detect pressure at any point on the screen, instead of the all-or-nothing click button on the Storm 1, and our video host was kind enough to explain this in painstaking detail in the video embedded after the break. The screen actually stiffens when it’s off or locked, and has a sort of spongy give to it when alive. He also confirmed in no uncertain terms the GSM and CDMA versions of the device will be packing WiFi. According to his Twitter account, we should be expecting a video about the OS soon as well.
[Thanks, Kristjan]

Lackluster Gmail support has been a real pain point for BlackBerry users, and we’ve really been hoping that this new “Enhanced Gmail Plug-in” would solve all that. It’s out as of today, and we’ve certainly gotten some improvements, like support for archiving messages, marking spam and managing labels / stars. Unfortunately, these new management features are only live synced one way, from the phone to the Gmail server, so many of the actions that take place desktop side won’t be reflected on the phone once that particular message has been picked up by the BlackBerry Internet Service. There’s also the small problem of installing the thing: we haven’t been successful so far on two different BlackBerries, and you have to make sure to uninstall the existing Gmail Plug-in. Meanwhile, in BlackBerry Enterprise Server land, the Google Apps Connector has now gone live, which means Google Apps users get push Gmail and what seems to be much tighter Exchange-style syncing. Let us know if you get either of these things working with your particular setup.

That shot of an Alltel-branded Tour in the wild turned out to be stone-cold legit seeing how the regional carrier (what’s left of it following the Verizon acquisition, anyhow) is now offering the phone for $200 — the same price you’ll find on Sprint or Verizon. That’s cool and all, but we know the real reason you’re reading this is that they’ve also launched the Samsung Glint, a low-cost flip with a VGA cam, stereo Bluetooth, and availability in both pink and blue. Both devices are available now, though we’ve yet to see ‘em show up on the carrier’s site so you might want to make some phone calls before running down to the store.

We’ve been seeing a lot of reports of Verizon data services being down today, possibly limited to BlackBerrys (which, ironically, are probably used in mission critical situations more than most other devices). What’s the status out there in the field? Anyone see any issues?
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Response from commenters has us thinking this is a pretty isolated incident, but keep the reports coming. Thanks, everyone!

Okay, so we sort of understand molding soap into familiar gadget shapes, but this bar of Pre soap utterly baffles by being scented “bourbon and Coke,” which seems a bit self-defeating. Smell like a hobo with webOS for just $13 — and don’t worry, there’s BlackBerry, iPhone, and Playstation soap on offer as well, presumably scented with Boone’s Farm and OE 800.

Sure, it’s more or less just a
BlackBerry Onyx with a trackpad, but slap a T-Mobile logo on it, and the excitement is all rejuvenated. Such a device was spotted in the wild by the folks at
Crackberry, sporting a silver chrome and a leather-clad battery cover. Not much to say here, but with that branding, we’re hoping it’s not long before heading into the consumer channels. Don’t worry AT&T friends, we’re sure
your GSM-equipped 9700 is just around the corner, too.

That new BlackBerry Curve 8520 for T-Mobile is in the house, sucking down EDGE data like it’s going out of style (oh, right, it is). For a device that can be scored for $50 at Walmart as of tomorrow ($130 at T-Mobile stores), this is a surprisingly solid handset. The keyboard is classic BlackBerry goodness, and the overall heft gives us at least a little bit of assurance that the phone can hold up to wear and tear better than its predecessors. Most of the changes are for the better, like a trio of media keys up top and the rubberized sides, but we’re not completely sold on the touchpad. It works great when it works, but if it’s too clean or our thumb is at the exact wrong moisture level, we found that we kind of “stuck” to the pad instead of gliding across it. A bit of texturing could go a long way. We also found the QVGA screen to be pretty dim, which is particularly unfortunate in light of RIM’s higher-end, high-res wonders, but it’s certainly passable. We’re planning on spending some more time with the handset, testing that EDGE network to the limit, giving UMA time to handle some of legendary conversational stylings, and seeing how many Engadget Podcast episodes we can narcissistically cram onto the bundled 1GB microSD card.
In speaking with RIM, it’s quite clear that the decision to go EDGE was primarily based on price, along with the fact that T-Mobile’s 3G rollout is still lacking — it’s still a head scratcher to us, though. The spokesperson also seemed pretty confident that the new touchpad interface is the way of the future, and we get the feeling the BlackBerry’s legendary trackball isn’t long for this world. Check out a quick video hands-on after the break, or you could opt for some fine unboxing shots below.

If you’ve been using your BlackBerry in the last 24 hours or so, you’ve probably noticed that red star plastered on the App World icon, signaling it’s time for an upgrade. Yes, RIM’s version of the app store has hit version 1.1, and the bulk of the update concerns better navigation options — new categories, top downloads for free and premium apps, and the ability to sort search results by name, release date, rating, price, and developer. Outside of that, we’ve also got the option to now archive apps on SD card or other memory, but unfortunately there’s no option to run those programs without reinstalling to internal memory. The update is available for all countries, including the recently-introduced group of ten. Full details after the break.

Say you’re in the middle of nowhere — in Australia, by the way — and you have an urgent need to, say, download and view an Excel spreadsheet in your inbox. What’s a fellow to do? Well, one option would be to take a gander at that Palm Treo Pro that has received Telstra’s coveted Blue Tick certification for awesome reception in the boondocks, but the problem is that it’s so hard to look at the Treo Pro with a straight face these days in light of the fact that the Pre’s now an ever-constant presence in our psyche. No worries, though, there’s another solid option: Telstra has now awarded the Blue Tick to the BlackBerry Bold, which means even the hardest-core road warriors should have no issue handling email from some of the harshest environs Australia’s cell tower-equipped landscape has to offer.

You know the saying “where there’s an XX20 series BlackBerry, there’s an XX30 series BlackBerry”? Of course you don’t, because we just made it up right this instant. But you know the saying now, and you should commit it to memory, because it’s generally true. To that end, it makes sense that 8520 that’s about to launch on T-Mobile and Vodafone would have a corporate cousin in the 8530, which — you guessed it — is basically destined to become RIM’s new low-end CDMA QWERTY offering. Boy Genius Report has it pegged for a QVGA display, EV-DO, BlackBerry OS 5.0, and a 2 megapixel camera; coming hot off the Tour we can’t say we’re that excited, but we’re sure it’ll find a home in plenty of briefcases, especially considering that it’ll apparently have the WiFi — which, if true, means Verizon’s making good on its promise.
