AT&T, Apple and Google respond to the FCC over Google Voice and the iPhone App Store

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Whoa — we were just sent AT&T response to the FCC’s investigation into the rejection of Google Voice apps from the iPhone app store, and Ma Bell isn’t pulling any punches: according to the letter, AT&T “had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application.” That puts the ball pretty firmly in Apple’s court, but it doesn’t close the door on AT&T’s involvement in App store approval shenanigans entirely, since the letter also says “AT&T has had discussions with Apple regarding only a handful of applications that have been submitted to Apple for review where, as described below, there were concerns that the application might create significant network congestion.” Not only did that result in CBS and MobiTV killing the Final Four app’s ability to stream video over 3G, it also explains what happened to SlingPlayer Mobile — we’ll see what the FCC says about that.

Update: And here come Apple and Google’s responses as well! We’re digesting everything as fast as we can, we’re going to do this semi-liveblog style after the break, so grab a frosty and dive in.

Update 2: Okay, so we’ve read through all three filings and broken them down after the break. Our main takeaway? Apple’s being pretty hypocritical by claiming on the one hand that the iPhone is at the forefront of a mobile revolution and then saying iPhone users can’t figure out how Google Voice is different than the iPhone’s built-in functionality on the other. Either your customers are paradigm-busting visionaries or they’re not very smart at all, Apple — you have to pick one. As for AT&T, well, it just seems like it’s worried about its network above all else, and while we think it’s ridiculous that it enforces the VoIP and SlingPlayer ban on the iPhone and not, say, Windows Mobile devices, we can see why the carrier would push those contract provisions hard. In the end, we’re just hoping the FCC forces everyone involved to be more open and transparent about what they’re doing and the deals they’re making — Apple’s not necessarily exaggerating when it says these are entirely new problems, and whatever happens next will set a precedent for a long time to come.

Samsung’s WEP870 Bluetooth headset comes with earbuds, bundles of joy

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Nothing too exhilarating here, but if you’re looking for something new to sit atop the peak on your ear, Samsung’s got a new trio it’d love for you to consider. The most interesting of the three is undoubtedly the WEP870, which marries a noise-canceling Bluetooth mono headset (with BT music streaming) to a set of earbuds. As with the less thrilling WEP850 and WEP470, this one also features multi-connection technology in order to pair with up to two BT devices at once. The 870 steps things up with an LCD screen to display battery level, call status and BT connection status, while the other two handle calls and little else. All three are available for purchase right now for $89.99 (WEP870), $69.99 (WEP850) and $39.99 (WEP470).

Verizon’s HTC Whitestone garners FCC approval

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

HTC’s making some serious moves in North America at the moment — not to say that’s necessarily anything new — and the Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 are both getting love from every angle. That’s a good thing, we figure — and the parade of high-end Windows Mobile hardware continues with the Whitestone, a presumed Diamond2 variant with a 3.6-inch WVGA display and 5 megapixel cam. Test documents confirm that it’s CDMA / EV-DO, though we’re not seeing any evidence of GSM; that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not there since the FCC doesn’t care to test non-US bands, but we definitely expected to see a full report on EDGE 850 / 1900. Now that the approval’s in, Verizon, it’s your move — let’s get the ball rolling, shall we?

Nokia N97 gets a minor firmware bump

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

It’s not going to knock your socks off with a plethora of Earth-shattering new features, a faster processor, and a capacitive display that magically sprouts out of the micro-USB port and replaces the resistive one, but Nokia’s latest N97 firmware still sounds like a worthwhile download. Version 12.0.024 is said to be purely a bug fix and performance improvement release, and early accounts seem to validate that claim — as always, availability will vary around the world based on your carrier and product code, but it’s worth a hookup to NSU to see if it’s available to you.

Eldar Murtazin at mobile-review teased us with that shot of Nokia’s RX-51 / N900 Maemo 5 tablet earlier today, and now he’s back in force with a detailed preview. We’re talking tons of hardware pictures and screenshots of what stands to be the standard-bearer for all Nokia devices going forward, and while we’d love to tell you all about how impressed we are with what we’re seeing of Maemo 5 and how disappointed we are in the Rover’s resistive touchscreen, we won’t hold you back — hit the read link and dive right in.

LG BL40 Chocolate Touch gets the hands-on treatment… on video!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

We’ve still got our hopes up for an August 23rd launch date, but in the meantime we do have a, well, tasty video of LG’s BL40 Chocolate Touch to tide us over. As you might have guessed, the UI is of the 3D S-Class variety. The accelerometer looks pretty snappy, and watching video seems to be a joy on the 4-inch, 21:9 display. Of course, we could give you a scene-by-scene recap, but we’d hate to spoil this Oscar-worthy production for you. Peep it yourself after the break.

Dell Mini 3i smartphone gets official outing in China

Monday, August 17th, 2009

At last, the much rumored Dell cellphone has made its first official appearance. The 3.5-inch 360 x 640 pixel device with capacitive touchscreen was on display in China running the Android-based Open Mobile System (OMS). The Mini 3i was on-hand as part of the launch of China Mobile’s new Application Platform that offers music, video, and app downloads to mobile phones from Nokia, Samsung, LG, and apparently, Dell. The candybar device lacks WiFi (or Chinese WAPI) and is strictly 2G GSM (no 3G) but does come with a 3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and 950mAh battery. Guess now we know why the early prototypes were met by a collective meh by mobile carriers earlier this year. No idea when this will ship but it looks China-bound for at least the near future. A few more pics after the break.

Sony Ericsson selects next president, appoints Howard Stringer chairman of the board

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Filed under:

It’s out with the old, in with the new over at Sony Ericsson as it tries to revamp both its image and its lineup in the face of stiff competition, weak financials, and an unfocused platform strategy. President Hideki Komiyama (pictured left) intends to retire at the end of the year, and stepping up to fill his shoes will be the current head of Ericsson Silicon Valley, Bert Nordberg (right). To get the dude up to speed, he’ll become co-president as of September 1 and take over sole control of the operation on October 15. Speaking of October 15, that’s also the date that Sir Howard Stringer — yes, the one and only chairman and CEO of Sony — will take over the chairmanship of Sony Ericsson’s executive board from outgoing Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg. Whether this signals a power shift in the joint venture from Ericsson to Sony is unclear, but they’ve specifically mentioned in a press conference today to announce the moves that they need to “address [their] smartphone weakness” — and yes, we’d agree. Do exactly that, Bert Nordberg.

Sony Ericsson Satio arrives at the FCC

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Well well, it looks like the mythical Sony Ericsson Satio is soon to go from beautiful fever-dream to actual reality — it’s popped into the FCC database with test results on GSM 850 and 1900, otherwise known as EDGE. Yeah, that sort of sucks, but we’re still holding out hope, since we don’t know the full story — it could be destined for a lame existence on AT&T, it could be sold unlocked, or it could be a Canadian or Latin American model. Seriously, though — it’s the Satio, and the government has one. You know what that means.
