You’d think the FCC would have legal clearance to reject this on humanitarian grounds.

So here’s what we know about the Leo with some certainty: it’s going to be awesomely high-end. Other than that, though, the sky’s the limit; no spec is too wild, no physical design too outlandish until we actually get some official information (or at least some really solid leaks). We wouldn’t call these latest renders “solid” by any stretch — in fact, we’re willing to bet it’s the result of a daydreamer with some graphic design background — but we want to believe, especially since the front is basically consistent with what we’ve seen previously. Imagine a rounded-off Touch HD with WinMo 6.5, a 1GHz Snapdragon, and a 5 megapixel cam accompanied by two high-output LEDs. We love the stylish “Pro.Three” branding (and we guess we’re going to forgive the “lorem ipsum” gibberish beneath it since this is a rough, unbranded render), but there are a few holes in this story: for one, we still don’t know how this dovetails with Firestone; two, the Touch Pro2 just came out, so we’re not sure why they’d release a device with the conflicting “Pro.Three” name so soon thereafter, particularly in a different form factor; and three, this might make more sense as one of HTC’s inaugural WinMo 7 devices. Given the rumored pie-in-the-sky October availability date, we’ll get this sorted out soon enough.
HTC Leo rendered again — maybe by HTC, more likely by fans originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Fri, 14 Aug 2009 13:18:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

BlackBerry’s newest consumer-class QWERTY smartphone — the Curve 8520 — seemed like a lock to launch on Vodafone UK on account of some scanned advertising a little while back, and sure enough, here it is. Considering that you can get virtually any phone in your wildest dreams for free on Voda as long as you pair it with an appropriately pricey contract, we’re not sure why you’d take up their offer of the 8520, really — especially considering that it tops out at EDGE speeds in a country where EDGE-only phones are antiquities better suited for museums than pockets. We guess that’d be what the “Why get this” section on the carrier’s product page is for, eh?

Variants of existing Vertu models are a dime a dozen. Actually, come to think of it, they’re the exact opposite of “a dime a dozen,” but we digress — the point is that we don’t really get too worked up these days when Nokia’s luxury brand decides to refinish one of its hilariously expensive models in another shade of ostrich hide. There are a few key differences with the new Ascent Ti Neon, though: one, they’ve actually reshaped it to better fit in a purse; two, they’ve changed out the leather bits for rubber; and three, it’s neon, for goodness’ sake. Despite the revised shape, the phone is exactly the same on the inside as any other Ascent Ti already on the market, which means euro 3G, a 3 megapixel cam, and 4GB of storage. It’ll all go for the bargain basement price of £6,000 (about $9,900) when it hits in October.

Followers, fans, and casual observers of HTC alike all know that when the company launches a new landscape QWERTY model, it’s a big deal. In fact, it’s more than a big deal — it’s a Big Deal. Many describe it as the ultimate smartphone form factor, the perfect execution of everything a modern handset is capable of doing — and realistically, no company has as much experience or know-how at making powerhouse landscape QWERTY sliders than HTC does.
That’s why droves of subscribers on virtually every carrier are on the edge of their seats awaiting the Touch Pro2’s release. Whether you love, hate, or feel nothing but pure, unadulterated ambivalence toward Windows Mobile, it’s hard to argue that the Pro2 isn’t a gorgeous smartphone at a distance, and T-Mobile USA’s gently-tweaked version is no exception. Unless you’re desperate for SLR-quality photography (which you’re frankly not going to get regardless of what phone you buy), the spec sheet reads like a dream — an expansive 3.6-inch WVGA display, full QWERTY, tilt-up display, all the 3G and WiFi you could ever want, and HTC’s latest and greatest build of TouchFLO 3D constantly working to make sure that WinMo cleans up nice — but is it true love or just lipstick on a pig? Let’s have a look.

We’ve know for a while that AT&T’s had an eye on launching a successor to the Shine — an obvious move, considering that the first model has been immensely successful for the carrier — but we weren’t too sure what form it’d take. Early launch documents suggested that AT&T might just take LG’s KF510 and slap a few logos on it, but if you look at what we’ve got here, that’s decidedly not the case. In fact, the Shine 2 (if that’s the launch name) really doesn’t look a whole lot different from the original, and judging from the smallish outline of the display that you can vaguely make out, it’ll stay firmly planted in midrange pricing territory. As far as we know, it’s still slated for launch later this year — but can’t we please have a BL40 to go along with it?
[Thanks, Ahres]

Say you’ve got a Nokia E71. Say, further, that you fully intend to upgrade to the E72 the moment it’s available (we can’t say we blame you). If you’d like to know more about the phone by the time it arrives on your doorstep than most people do in the lifetimes of their devices, we might recommend grabbing pork sandwich, a 64-ounce Coke, and your favorite blankie and curling up with mobile-review’s epic “first look.” Spec-wise, the new model is an outright slam dunk over the one it replaces, and it seems that mobile-review generally agrees — sticking points were few and far between though he seems ambivalent on the optical d-pad, and it’s also worth noting that the keyboard is now based on the E63’s design rather than the E71’s. Even if you don’t want to read through the somewhat roughly-translated text, it’s hard to argue with mobile-review’s great photography — and it’s not like you’re seeing an E72 in the flesh today, so you may as well have a look, eh?

It’s not every day that you see a USB data card launch that can accept Memory Stick Micro M2 cards, so we wanted to call out this little puppy on Rogers. As you might imagine from the unusual memory card support, it comes to us from our good friends at Sony Ericsson — and not to fret, because the MD400g takes plain ol’ microSD cards, too, all the way up to 8GB. It’s got integrated GPS, supports up to 7.2Mbps down, and can roam globally on 2G and 3G networks; add in that wild red and white paintjob, and you’ve got a winner on your hands — especially when you consider that it’s free on a three-year contract.

There’s always been a little chunk of softness in our cold, stone hearts for candybar QWERTY handsets. Stylus interaction? Not so much. That’s why it’s a little disappointing to see HP’s upcoming iPAQ K3 Obsidian handset for AT&T show up with a stylus on board, despite the initial leaked documents we saw that clearly stated otherwise. Still, it’s nice to see how Windows Mobile 6.5 can operate under such conditions, and the 2.43-inch screen is OLED, even if it’s restricted to a mere QVGA resolution. It appears that a scroll wheel does the duty of shuffling through that honeycomb menu. As far as we know, we’re still looking at a November release.

We don’t take the word of just any retailer at face value, but when a big player like eXpansys decides that it’s time to list a new phone in its inventory, that usually means something’s afoot. The company’s British outpost has now listed full details for a phone it’s identifying simply as “Xperia” in its headline, but if you read further in, you’ll see that the product code is “SEMXP3_BLK_UK”, suggesting X3 is the likely moniker for the Rachael-powered Android set. For your hard-earned (but yet-to-be-determined) money, you’ll get pretty much everything you could possibly want, spec-wise: 10Mbps HSDPA and 2Mbps HSUPA, 8 megapixel cam with image stabilization and LED flash, 3.5mm headphone jack, a 4-inch 800 x 400 display (a first at this resolution for a production Android device), AGPS, and microSDHC expansion. Sadly, it’s listed as 900 / 2100 only for the 3G radio, so we’ll need to rely on the telecommunication gods (and Sony Ericsson, we suppose) to deliver a North American version as well.
