Whoa — we were just sent AT&T response to the FCC’s investigation into the rejection of Google Voice apps from the iPhone app store, and Ma Bell isn’t pulling any punches: according to the letter, AT&T “had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application.” That puts the ball pretty firmly in Apple’s court, but it doesn’t close the door on AT&T’s involvement in App store approval shenanigans entirely, since the letter also says “AT&T has had discussions with Apple regarding only a handful of applications that have been submitted to Apple for review where, as described below, there were concerns that the application might create significant network congestion.” Not only did that result in CBS and MobiTV killing the Final Four app’s ability to stream video over 3G, it also explains what happened to SlingPlayer Mobile — we’ll see what the FCC says about that.
Update: And here come Apple and Google’s responses as well! We’re digesting everything as fast as we can, we’re going to do this semi-liveblog style after the break, so grab a frosty and dive in.
Update 2: Okay, so we’ve read through all three filings and broken them down after the break. Our main takeaway? Apple’s being pretty hypocritical by claiming on the one hand that the iPhone is at the forefront of a mobile revolution and then saying iPhone users can’t figure out how Google Voice is different than the iPhone’s built-in functionality on the other. Either your customers are paradigm-busting visionaries or they’re not very smart at all, Apple — you have to pick one. As for AT&T, well, it just seems like it’s worried about its network above all else, and while we think it’s ridiculous that it enforces the VoIP and SlingPlayer ban on the iPhone and not, say, Windows Mobile devices, we can see why the carrier would push those contract provisions hard. In the end, we’re just hoping the FCC forces everyone involved to be more open and transparent about what they’re doing and the deals they’re making — Apple’s not necessarily exaggerating when it says these are entirely new problems, and whatever happens next will set a precedent for a long time to come.

The O1 isn’t even out yet, but a new filing with China’s regulatory folks suggests that Lenovo’s already hard at work at a lower-cost version that would swap out metal bits for plastic ones and kick the camera down from 5 megapixels to 3. On the plus side, buyers still make out with 8GB of internal storage and quite possibly China Mobile’s homegrown Android skin, so it can’t be all bad, right? Then again, this remix could be for a different carrier altogether, in which case we might be spared Open Mobile System’s uncomfortably iPhone-esque home screen — and really, that’d be just fine with us.

We’d figured the 5530 was destined for markets around the globe where 2G still dominates, so imagine our pleasant surprise to see that good ol’ Nokia USA is as amped as anyone to start selling the company’s new low-cost S60 5th Edition device. This leaves potential buyers in a doozy of a dilemma, though: most retailers are now selling the 5530’s big brother, the 5800, for under $300, which makes the $290 sticker for a 3G-less version pretty hard to swallow. On the flipside, the 5530’s unquestionably the more attractive phone and the updated home screen is going to leave 5800 owners insanely envious. It’s a tough call, and it’s not a call we’d want to have to make — one of each, perhaps? There’s no shipping date listed on the preorder, but for your patience Nokia’s awarding you with an MD-8 stereo Bluetooth speaker if you order online — just pony up your $289.99, pick the white or black version of the phone, twiddle your thumbs, and don’t be shocked when the New York and Chicago flagships get stock before you do.
[Thanks, Oscar M.]

That shot of an Alltel-branded Tour in the wild turned out to be stone-cold legit seeing how the regional carrier (what’s left of it following the Verizon acquisition, anyhow) is now offering the phone for $200 — the same price you’ll find on Sprint or Verizon. That’s cool and all, but we know the real reason you’re reading this is that they’ve also launched the Samsung Glint, a low-cost flip with a VGA cam, stereo Bluetooth, and availability in both pink and blue. Both devices are available now, though we’ve yet to see ‘em show up on the carrier’s site so you might want to make some phone calls before running down to the store.

It’s still hard to believe that Nokia’s already upstaging the N97 with the N97 mini just two months after the big guy shipped, but here we are, staring at the FCC documentation. There’s not much to go on here besides this label-location drawing, which is marked with a 1:1 scale — allowing us to set our regular N97 down next to it and show you just how little Nokia achieved with all that development money. Check it after the break, along with another pic of the mini the inimitable Eldar Murtazin just posted to his blog.

Typically, dual-mode global handsets on carriers like Sprint and Verizon have a distinctly high-end (or at least a midrange) flair to them, but the Escapade is rolling up on this scene to ask “why is that?” Verizon’s new Pantech-sourced clamshell — which will be sold under the Verizon name alone — lacks EV-DO, UMTS, and even EDGE data, concentrating instead on offering voice and text services in “220 destinations worldwide.” It’s got a 2 megapixel camera, support for voice commands, Bluetooth, and VZ Navigator, but the most compelling feature might be the price: $29.99 on contract after rebate. Look for it to launch online and in stores tomorrow.

We know of precisely two types of radios going into Heros (or would that be Heroes?) right now: the 900 / 2100MHz 3G for global use that everyone’s using so far, and an 850 / 1900 version for North America that the FCC’s had the pleasure of using. Well, you know how FCC labs work — they get to play with all the toys before anyone else does — and now they’re checking out another version of HTC’s latest and greatest Android device with CDMA / EV-DO. This lends near-infinite credibility to the buzz that Sprint’s signed up to launch the phone this fall, presumably around the same time it drops the InstinctQ from Samsung, at which point it’ll have both the QWERTY and full-touch Android angles covered. Options are good, are they not?

Just because you can’t buy Acer’s mighty F1 yet doesn’t mean you can’t do a whole lot of learning about it now that the company has officially posted the beastly handset’s user manual online. Actually, if you want to get technical about it, they’ve posted a manual for an “S200″ — but browsing it quickly reveals that they’re talking about the F1 judging by the diagrams and specs, which leads us to wonder whether S200 is the official go-to-market name, a regional variant, or something even more sinister. No bother — at any rate, the manual is a good opportunity to learn about Windows Mobile 6.5, which the F1 will be shipping with; you’re also reminded of that totally bangin’ Qualcomm 8250 (that’s Snapdragon to the lay folk) running at 1GHz, the 3.8-inch WVGA display, the full HSPA, and the 5 megapixel autofocus camera. Americans will be bummed to see the lack of HSPA 850, though they should be able to cling to 1900MHz in many markets — and it’s not like North America has gotten a lot of mobile love from Acer in the past, so it certainly comes as no surprise. Would-be Sidekick LX 2009 owners have one less reason to keep dragging their feet this week with the dropping of the model’s price (in both Carbon and Orchid variants, of course) down to $175 on contract after discounts from the original retail price of $250. We’re not sure what’s ultimately responsible for the price cut beyond the usual ultra-rapid retail shelf aging process and the gnat-like attention span of consumers like ourselves, but either way, the move helps put the high-end featurephone back in line with some of its contemporaries (we’re sorry, but running more than a BlackBerry Tour or an iPhone 3GS on subsidy makes about as much sense as mail-order beef). So, does this tip the scale for anyone out there? Who’s taking the plunge?
