Qik for iPhone 3GS update removes ‘WiFi only’ restriction, 3G streaming is a go

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Well, that was fast. Just one week after hitting the scene, Qik for iPhone 3GS has been updated to move that nasty “WiFi only” restriction, meaning you can now stream your videos to the internet over a 3G network. We just tried it ourselves and, sure enough, it works like a charm. After you’ve read through all that FCC literature, hit up the read link and download the (thankfully still free) app — just be careful how much fun you have with it this weekend. Let’s see how AT&T’s network handles this one. [Warning: iTunes app link.]

Nokia’s 5800 Navigation Edition announced, finding its way to stores soon

Nokia's 5800 Navigation Edition finding its way to stores soon

The Garmin-Asus nuvifone is finally inbound to domestic retailers, but it’s taken so many wrong turns on the way that it’s given the competition plenty of time to catch up and prepare their own nav-enabled mobile offerings. TomTom’s iPhone kit is due any minute, and now Nokia is getting into the game, announcing the 5800 Navigation Edition. Instead of coming with music it comes with a pre-loaded copy of Ovi Maps and lifetime licenses for voice-guided driving and walking directions. It also includes a car charger and a handy-dandy auto mounting kit, all swingingly demonstrated in a video below, and is set to ship sometime in the third quarter of this year (i.e. soon) at an expected retail of €285 (about $410).

You’d think the FCC would have legal clearance to reject this on humanitarian grounds.

Acer posts S200 user manual, looks like an F1 to us

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Just because you can’t buy Acer’s mighty F1 yet doesn’t mean you can’t do a whole lot of learning about it now that the company has officially posted the beastly handset’s user manual online. Actually, if you want to get technical about it, they’ve posted a manual for an “S200″ — but browsing it quickly reveals that they’re talking about the F1 judging by the diagrams and specs, which leads us to wonder whether S200 is the official go-to-market name, a regional variant, or something even more sinister. No bother — at any rate, the manual is a good opportunity to learn about Windows Mobile 6.5, which the F1 will be shipping with; you’re also reminded of that totally bangin’ Qualcomm 8250 (that’s Snapdragon to the lay folk) running at 1GHz, the 3.8-inch WVGA display, the full HSPA, and the 5 megapixel autofocus camera. Americans will be bummed to see the lack of HSPA 850, though they should be able to cling to 1900MHz in many markets — and it’s not like North America has gotten a lot of mobile love from Acer in the past, so it certainly comes as no surprise. T-Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 down to $175

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Would-be Sidekick LX 2009 owners have one less reason to keep dragging their feet this week with the dropping of the model’s price (in both Carbon and Orchid variants, of course) down to $175 on contract after discounts from the original retail price of $250. We’re not sure what’s ultimately responsible for the price cut beyond the usual ultra-rapid retail shelf aging process and the gnat-like attention span of consumers like ourselves, but either way, the move helps put the high-end featurephone back in line with some of its contemporaries (we’re sorry, but running more than a BlackBerry Tour or an iPhone 3GS on subsidy makes about as much sense as mail-order beef). So, does this tip the scale for anyone out there? Who’s taking the plunge?

Garmin-Asus nuvifone M20 launches in Taiwan, Windows Mobile and all

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Following last month’s launch of the proprietary OS’d G60, Taiwan’s now playing host to the Windows Mobile-based M20 from Garmin-Asus, the joint venture’s second model. Local carrier Chunghwa will be carrying the phone, which features HSDPA, a VGA display, 3 megapixel cam, and comprehensive navigation capabilities that earn it the Garmin name — but it turns out they’ll also be launching the iPhone 3GS and Hero in the next few days, a situation that effectively defines the phrase “hostile competitive landscape.” Best of luck, Garmin-Asus — given the Duke Nukem-esque delays you’ve encountered in your bumpy road to retail, you need all the luck you can get if you want to turn a profit any time soon.

HTC prepping better, stronger firmware for Hero

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

The Hero might not pack a 1GHz Snapdragon or anything awesome like that, but that’s no excuse for it to lag its older cousins in day-to-day use. Sure, you’ve got Sense on there — but HTC’s got to keep things snappy, particularly in light of how well TouchFLO 3D performs on the newest batch of devices. Fortunately, we’ve followed up with HTC in light of a recent SlashGear report that there’s fresh firmware on the way, and indeed, it’s been confirmed — details on the exact contents are sketchy at best, but we’re cautiously heartened by the “performance” part of the “performance improvements and bug fixes” statement we’ve received. We’ll see just how much better it gets.

Blockbuster partnering with Motorola for OnDemand movies

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Once upon a time Blockbuster could do no wrong, but lately its various schemes have felt, well, rather desperate. The launch of the Blockbuster Mediapoint set-top box largely fell on deaf ears, and what about the “talks” with mobile manufacturers we first heard about way back in 2007? Well, at least it looks like the latter is amounting to something. If all goes according to plan, the company’s OnDemand digital download service will soon be available on select Motorola cell phones. There is no word yet on which devices will be supported, or when this will all go down, but all the same we can’t help but wonder if this will amount to a much needed revenue source for the company, or just another of its painful death throes.

Fortune names RIM fastest growing company… in the world

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that RIM is doing pretty well even in the face of an economic downturn, but it looks like it’s been doing really well — at least according to Fortune, which has just named the Canadian company the fastest growing firm in the world. That’s apparently based on a combination of profits, turnover, and investment return over three years which, in RIM’s case, translates an 84% growth in profits in the past three years, a 77% growth in revenue, and a total return of 45%. It’s also actually the first time RIM has made the list, although that’s at least partly due to the fact that Fortune didn’t include non-US firms last time around.

Philips’ Android-powered V900 for China Mobile shown off as OMS launch draws near

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

In China, excited about Android, and finding yourself a bit let down by Dell’s first smartphone outing? Chin up, kid — maybe Philips has your number. The company already has an established Asian phone business with its Xenium line of ridiculously energy-efficient handsets, and as suspected, it turns out it’ll be one of China Mobile’s launch partners as it kicks off its Android-based Open Mobile System next month alongside Lenovo, Dell, and HTC subsidiary Dopod. What you’re looking at here is the V900, and like all OMS devices, it runs a highly customized Android build that’s taken on a vaguely iPhone-esque appearance; other features include WiFi, a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and — if you squint really hard — the momentary believe that you’re actually holding a Touch Diamond2. Looks-wise, we think we prefer every other OMS launch phone, but it’s good to see that there’ll be plenty of options on the shelves.
