SlingPlayer 1.1 for iPhone promises DISH integration for US, 3G streaming elsewhere (maybe)

Monday, August 10th, 2009

As history tells us time and time again, iPhone apps / updates submitted to Apple aren’t a sure deal for approval. Still, we can’t help but like where SlingPlayer Mobile is going with the recently-submitted version 1.1. In addition to providing true 16:9 widescreen support that stretches across the whole screen, Slingbox owners with DISH Network can now navigate using a touch-supported native browser, instead of pushing through the TV-standard browsing screen being streamed in. That last bit’s great for US customers, but it’s what the rest of the world might get that has our interests very piqued. The company’s submitted a version for use outside of AT&T’s homeland that would finally allow for streaming over a 3G connection — again, not a certainty for approval, but we’ll be most interested to see if that one makes its way through the system.

Apple confirms and expresses sadness over death of Chinese iPhone prototype handler

Tuesday, July 21st, 2009

Reports have circulated the internet that a 25-year old worker at Chinese manufacturer Foxconn, which produces all the iPhone models for Apple, committed suicide last week following revelation that a fourth-generation iPhone prototype, one of the 16 iPhones he was responsible for, had gone missing. Some stories circulating have described illegal searches of the man’s apartment and interrogation involving physical abuse by other Foxconn employees. While not confirming the case being a suicide or the cause being the disappearing device, a spokesperson for the Cupertino-based company did release a statement corroborating the news of his death, saying that it is “saddened by the tragic loss of this young employee, and we are awaiting results of the investigations into his death. We require our suppliers to treat all workers with dignity and respect.” The status of the missing iPhone prototype, which may or may not have been one that earlier this month found itself on eBay given the timeframe (although a 3GS model and not “fourth generation”) remains unknown. Our hearts go out to all involved.

EXOvault case wraps your iPhone in cold, hard steel

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Do none of the gazillion iPhone cases currently on the market suit your fancy? Are you still looking for a holster that’s really built to take abuse? Look no further, as the handcrafted EXOvault is an all-metal sheath that can be ordered in aluminum, brass or titanium. Beyond that, details are surprisingly scant, leaving us to assume “what you see is what you get.” Be sure to make clear what kind of iPhone you have when ordering, and be extra sure to have $95 / $95 / $300 (respectively) in liquidated funds available before pulling the trigger.

iPhone 3GS PlayStation, Game Boy Advance emulators demoed on video

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

A final iPhone 3GS jailbreak hasn’t been released yet, but that isn’t stopping enterprising hackers from trying to get at all that extra horsepower, and some of the first notable hacks we’ve seen are these updated PlayStation 1 and Game Boy Advance emulator ports, which run way faster than the versions for the original and 3G. The revved up hardware in Apple’s latest is apparently capable of running either of these at 150 – 225fps with zero frameskipping, which is pretty impressive. Of course, we’ll be way more impressed when the Dev Team releases a 3GS jailbreak and we can hit these up ourselves, but in the meantime there are plenty of videos to with which to while away the time at the read links.

Wireless charging comes to Apple’s iPhone 3GS, thanks to WildCharge

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Envious of your Pre toting pals and that Touchstone charging rig? Don’t sweat it — WildCharge is coming through in the clutch to bring similar wireless charging technology to Apple’s own handset. Starting today, iPhone (3G and 3GS included) and iPod touch users can order up a WildCharge Skin along with a WildCharger Pad in order to bring wire-free charging to their smartphone. Just slap the skin on, plug the pad in and toss the handset down on said pad. Just like that, you’ve got fresh energy flowing without having to scour the house for that little AC adapter. The pain? $34.99 for the skin, or $79.99 for the skin and pad.

ColorWare outs custom colors for the Apple iPhone 3GS

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

If you’re anything at all like us, you were just a tad disappointed by the color “options” of Apple’s newest foray into the world of mobile phones, the iPhone 3GS. After all, who wants to be limited to just black and white these days? Not us, that’s for sure — and ColorWare’s just announced a fix for all that. Pricing for these customs jobs runs $150 for the back of the handset, $20 a piece for the bezel frame and button, and $15 the SIM holder. They’ll also do up your earbuds for an additional $15. A small price to pay for beauty, no? Another shot of a different color combo after the break.

Rogers wants some of that AT&T mojo, rolls out steeper iPhone 3G S discounts for current customers

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Rogers must know a good thing when it sees it, because it’s essentially copied AT&T’s modified plans for providing deeper subsidies to more customers looking to upgrade to an iPhone 3G S in the next few weeks. The details are just a little bit different though: with Rogers, the new deal is that anyone who bought an iPhone 3G between July 11 and September 30 of 2008 — and has averaged CAD $100 or more a month on their bill — will be able to nab the 16GB or 32GB for $199 and $299, respectively, on a three-year contract. Buyers between July 11 and December 31 of last year or who didn’t manage to average $100 a month will get the less heavily-discounted prices of $449 and $549, while any customer will be able to waltz in and spend $699 or $799, a princely sum indeed.

Some iPhone 3G S orders set to be delivered tomorrow

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Waiting days in the blistering sun for a phone that more level-headed folks (that is, not us) will be able to get by simply waltzing into a store a few days later just isn’t what it used to be, is it? As iPhones make the inevitable transition from wildly-anticipated objects of lust to commodities, it seems that Apple’s putting progressively less effort into carefully orchestrating and micro-managing launches — and if you want solid proof of that, look no further than the shipping tracking numbers coming off of the online Apple Store’s order status site where you’ll find that some iPhone 3G S units should be in buyers’ hands tomorrow. If you’re counting, that’d be a full two days before the official release of this Friday — and while we suppose the company could have some agreement in place with its carriers to hold onto the units until the official release, we’re not giving UPS that much credit.

iPhone 3G S processor specs: 600MHz CPU, 256MB of RAM

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Apple’s being pretty cagey with the hard specs of the iPhone 3G S, but apparently T-Mobile Netherlands didn’t get the message — it’s just posted up a specs page listing 256MB of RAM and a 600MHz CPU. That’s up from 128MB and 412MHz in the first-gen and the 3G, and it’s basically exactly what was rumored. Of course, the 3G S also has that new PowerVR SGX graphics chip that supports OpenGL ES 2.0, so the total speed boost is probably more than just pure clock speed, but we’ll find out for sure when we get our hands on one.

iPhone 3G S plans revealed on Rogers, O2

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

It’d take a really acutely developed talent for shutting oneself off from news to not know how much the iPhone 3G S is going to run on AT&T — $199 and $299 for the 16GB and 32GB models on contract, just in case you’ve forgotten — but what about some of the other countries that are destined to be launching the new model alongside the US on the same day? Up north, we’ve been told by a company spokesman that Apple partner Rogers will be pricing them at CAD $199 and $299 on three-year contracts, which works out to about $177 and $266; the old 3G, meanwhile, will be sold for (you guessed it) CAD $99. Tethering will be available and there will be no-contract pricing, but details haven’t yet been announced there. Meanwhile, O2 over in the UK has dropped details on its site that put both the 3G S 16GB and 32GB as cheap as free if you sign up for a rich-enough two-year deal. Must be nice, eh?
