TomTom’s iPhone car kit promo video is enticing, but still no mention of price or release date

Not to knock cellophane tape as a method for in-car iPhone navigation, but if you want to use the new TomTom app in a more proper setting, you’ll want the official TomTom car kit. In addition to enhancing the GPS signal and charging your iPhone, it’s also got hands-free dialing and a speaker that’s (presumably) better than the phone solo for giving directions. At a rumored price of just under $200 with software, it’s not a bad deal if you were planning to shell out $100 for the US maps, anyway. We’re still on the fence, but the hypnotic soundtrack of the promotion video is admittedly alluring. See for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Arthur]

Qik for iPhone 3GS update removes ‘WiFi only’ restriction, 3G streaming is a go

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Well, that was fast. Just one week after hitting the scene, Qik for iPhone 3GS has been updated to move that nasty “WiFi only” restriction, meaning you can now stream your videos to the internet over a 3G network. We just tried it ourselves and, sure enough, it works like a charm. After you’ve read through all that FCC literature, hit up the read link and download the (thankfully still free) app — just be careful how much fun you have with it this weekend. Let’s see how AT&T’s network handles this one. [Warning: iTunes app link.]

USAA’s Deposit@Mobile app puts check deposits a mug shot away

Monday, August 10th, 2009

The problem with banks, you see, is that they’re one of the few remaining weak links in our ultimate goal of eliminating all human interaction. If you’ve got a check you need to deposit in your account, you’ve got to trek all the way out to your local branch; sure, granted, you can slip the check in an ATM, but your odds of encountering another living creature in the process of doing that are nonzero. Fortunately, USAA — which counts military personnel as a significant percentage of its customer base — is helping to close that loop with its “Deposit@Mobile” service, a component of its just-launched mobile banking app in the iPhone’s App Store. The secret, you see, lies in the iPhones magical camera which can “take” a “picture” of the check, transmit it to USAA, and boom — your cash is instantly deposited. No muss, no fuss, and no pesky people to get between you and your hard-earned cash. Of course, that doesn’t change the fact that you’ve got to get the check from someone in the first place… but, you know, one thing at a time.

Comcast Mobile iPhone app video walkthrough

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

The free Comcast Mobile iPhone app just hit the App Store, and it’s actually a pretty nice little interface to lots of Comcast features you might not otherwise use or care about. The 1.0 release offers access to your Comcast email, integrates with Digital Voice to provide visual voicemail, and serves up a rudimentary program guide and On Demand trailers — nothing earth shattering, but all nicely implemented. Read on for some quick impressions and a video!

Sirius XM iPhone app coming this week, says customer support

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

Just in case a new iPhone model and OS 3.0 weren’t enough goodies for this week, Sirius XM support team members are sending emails out announcing the company’s long-awaited iPhone / iPod touch app will finally seeing the light of day and will launch this Thursday, June 18th. We just got off the phone with a customer service rep who confirmed the letters are legit, so unless there’s some communication breakdown on the corporate latter, looks like it’s really, finally coming. It’ll be available as a free download from the App Store, but those who subscribe to the gratis Basic Online Service will have to upgrade to the $2.99 monthly premium plan to have it on the go. We’re a bit light on other details — we can’t imagine it being as full-featured as the standalone receivers — but it’s a good bet we’ll have all our questions answered before the week is out.

Amazon’s new iPhone-friendly Kindle Store takes some of the heartache out of mobile book buying

Monday, May 11th, 2009

The first (and last) time we attempted to buy a Kindle book from our iPhone we were frankly astonished by how bad the process was — basically negating decades of mobile browsing evolution and sending us through an Enlightenment-era, desktop-style purchasing process in Mobile Safari. Well, Amazon’s finally seen reason, and embedded a more mobile friendly purchasing experience into its iPhone Kindle app. The store is still accessed from the “Get Books” button on the top, and while the list of links and the search box still spit you out into Mobile Safari results pages, at least it’s all phone-optimized from start to finish.
