Nokia E63 The Latest Addition to The Eseries Family

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Nokia has announced the latest addition to its Eseries family, the E63 cell phone. Featuring a design that is similar to that of the popular E71, the E63 sports a 2 megapixel camera with LED flash in addition to a microSD card slot for extra storage. The QWERTY keyboard has been redesigned with a smaller space bar and extra character keys, as well.

The Nokia E63 is also the first smartphone in Nokia’s Eseries product line to feature a standard 3.5mm audio port, allowing you to use your own headphones without needing an adapter.

For those keeping score, the things that the E63 loses in comparison to the more expensive E71 are: it is thicker, it lacks GPS and HSDPA data, the camera is 2 megapixel fixed focus, and the body is made of plastic instead of the E71’s metal.

The Nokia E63 is expected to begin shipping within the next few weeks, priced at EUR199 (US$250) before taxes and subsidies, and is available in a red or blue color scheme.

The Android Isn’t Secure Yet

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Google has finally revealed what fixes it has put in place to get Android back up to speed after two key errors were highlighted.

The most recent problem came when it was discovered that users were given top-level administrator privileges automatically on their handsets, and any text they entered could be read as a system command.

The problem was discovered when an unsuspecting user typed ‘reboot’ in a text, and the phone responded by shutting down and restarting.

The handset is designed to be able to work from a remote device attached by serial port, but given the lack of such an input, the phone just used the keyboard instead.

“We tried really hard to secure Android. This is definitely a big bug,” Rich Cannings, of the Android security team, said according to ZDNet. “The reason why we consider it a large security issue is because root access on the device breaks our application sandbox.”

However, he did say it would be difficult for malicious hackers to exploit the flaw, as it would require the user to download a programme that forced them to type in certain commands to give the hacker access.

The other flaw fixed in the update was the browser vulnerability that meant certain websites with malicious code built-in could be used to assume control of the browser.

The update helped fix this and other problems in the browser, caused by Android shipping with older versions of software, and would allow malicious hackers to assume control of certain parts of the phone.

At least Google can hold its hands up when necessary… albeit only when things have been fixed.

Vertu Launches – Ferrari Ascent Ti Phone

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

Want fries with that? Place your order at any fast-food hamburger chain and you can expect to get that question. But for a more sizable purchase – say, a Ferrari – deep-fried potatoes aren’t going to cut it. That’s where Vertu comes along. The premium mobile phone maker owned by Nokia has already established itself among premium sportscar buyers with a number of special editions of their automotive-inspired Ascent range, including their Racetrack Legends series, and with Ferrari enthusiasts specifically with the special Ferrari Challenge edition. That was followed by the Vertu Ascent Ferrari 60, celebrating the company’s 60th anniversary, an additional Ferrari 1947 edition, and has now been supplanted by the new Ferrari Ascent Ti.

While the previous versions were based on the aging Ascent, the new Ferrari model starts life as the newly updated Ascent Ti, which features both quad-band GSM and WCDMA radios for use around the world, Bluetooth, Micro-USB, 3MP auto-focus flash camera and four gigs of storage, all encased in a titanium chassis with a sapphire crystal display and stainless-steel keys. The Ferrari edition further upgrades the package with PVD coating and a battery cover styled after a Ferrari’s hood, complete with three-dimensional Prancing Horse logo. Each of the three editions – in Nero (black), Rosso (red) and Giallo (yellow) – will only be produced in limited numbers, so don’t be surprised to see some dealers charging a considerable premium for the ultimate side-order to serve alongside a tasty Ferrari road car.

DOCOMO Unveils 22 Handsets

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

In a sign of the times where many countries have saturated mobile phone markets, Japan’s NTT DoCoMo has abandoned its traditional marketing strategies and released new handsets aimed at very clearly defined niches. Japan’s number-one carrier revealed 22 new phones in Tokyo this morning that are most notable for what they lack – the company’s tried and trusted series numbers that customers are very familiar with. Instead of 90x and 70x series models, DoCoMo is hoping prospective customers will identify with one of its new Style, Prime, Smart or Pro series phones when considering changing handsets or carriers.

If those labels aren’t obvious enough, DoCoMo also spelled out that the four badges represent fashionable, more-or-less normal, geeky and businesslike people, respectively. As for the phones themselves, they continue the Japanese obsession with adding ever more features to increasingly bulky handsets.

New functions in this round of updates include real-time location tracking of friends, online multiplayer games and phone-based widgets for the first time. The handsets will start hitting the market in Japan from 19 November and prices will vary according to the length and kind of contract taken out.

Confirmed – Data Plans on New Smart Device Activations Beginning November 14th !

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

A HowardForums user has confirmed weeks of speculation concerning Verizon’s reported plan to force new customers who wish to purchase smart devices such as the XV6900 or the forthcoming Samsung Saga on data plans regardless of the customer’s desire for the plan.

Beginning November 14th, new customers who purchase BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices will be required to add on a $30 or higher smartphone data plan in order to purchase the devices and use 3G data. As a further anti-consumer practice, Verizon will be eliminating the option to block 3G data access from such devices (for those that prefer using Wi-Fi access exclusively in lieu of 3G if the device supports it) as well as disabling pay as you go data and 10MB access plans.

This initiative will also be expanded in 2009 to include feature phones with HTML browsers, with Verizon forcing $15 or higher data plans for those devices.  It remains to be seen whether these changes will reduce customer confusion which is the intention of the move, or drive savvy consumers away from the carrier for its business practices.

OMNIA’S Big Brother – Samsung T*OMNIA – Was Launched In Korea

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

Samsung Korea announced yesterday the T*OMNIA smartphone, the OMNIA’s big brother. If basically both the OMNIA and T*OMNIA are similar, the Korean version has however 4 improved features, with :

- A slightly larger Screen 3.3” (Regular OMNIA has only a 3.22”)
- A Higher Screen Resolution of 480 x 800 (Regular OMNIA has only a 240 x 400 screen resolution)
- A DMB TV Tuner (Digital TV Tuner)

Except the above mentioned differences and a larger size (115.2 x 58.1 x 13.65 mm), the T*OMNIA received the same features than its little bother.
It is interesting to underline here that this T*OMNIA is using the same hardware (Digital TV tuner, Screen Size and Resolution) has the Japanese OMNIA, the 930SC, that we had the chance to play with a couple of days ago, with the exception of having on the Korean Version a Windows Mobile 6.1 OS.
