Blockbuster partnering with Motorola for OnDemand movies

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Once upon a time Blockbuster could do no wrong, but lately its various schemes have felt, well, rather desperate. The launch of the Blockbuster Mediapoint set-top box largely fell on deaf ears, and what about the “talks” with mobile manufacturers we first heard about way back in 2007? Well, at least it looks like the latter is amounting to something. If all goes according to plan, the company’s OnDemand digital download service will soon be available on select Motorola cell phones. There is no word yet on which devices will be supported, or when this will all go down, but all the same we can’t help but wonder if this will amount to a much needed revenue source for the company, or just another of its painful death throes.

Motorola Endeavor HX1 shows up in retail packaging, rumored for $159.99 in Sprint stores

Monday, August 10th, 2009

We know the HX1 is good — possibly the best — but is it $160 worth of good? That’s a question that we’d frankly rather not have to answer — we’d be more comfortable with a “is it $120 worth of good” type of situation — but a poster on HTCPedia has showed up bearing pictures of a retail HX1 in the wild (obviously intended for Asian distribution) along with a hot rumor that it’ll be a Sprint exclusive launching within the next month for a whopping $159.99. We’re guessing the technology Moto licensed from Invisio wasn’t cheap (Invisio’s forerunner, Nextlink, was renowned for making excellent but exorbitantly expensive headsets in Bluetooth’s early days), but no matter how good the HX1 is, it’s tough for the average phone owner to justify spending more on their handsfree than they do on the phone itself. For now, we’re hoping this rumor doesn’t pan out, but just in case, you might want to start socking away twenties instead of buying 2,000 Nintendo DSi points every other day. Seriously, what are you using them on, anyway?

Motorola Morrison specs purportedly leak out

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Hopefully Motorola’s cooking up a super-special custom UI for the Android-powered Morrison, because the purported spec list that just leaked out is looking pretty average — Moto’s newest slider will apparently sport a 528MHz Qualcomm processor with 256MB of RAM, or basically the same setup as the HTC G1, myTouch, and Hero. Yeah, we know this is supposed to be a lower-end set, but isn’t it high time we saw some fundamentally different Android hardware?

Oh, by the way: August 7, 2009

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Here’s some of the other stuff that happened in the wide world of mobile for Friday, August 7th, 2009:

  • In addition to the BL40 and BL42, it looks like LG’s upcoming Chocolate series is also going to include a lower-end BL20 according to a newly-uncovered user agent profile. Whatever it is, it’s got a QVGA display — a far cry from the epic 21:9 unit on the BL40. [Via PhoneArena]
  • Motorola’s W562 candybar for China has broken cover, and needless to say, you won’t find any Android here. CDMA and a 2 megapixel camera, yes, but no Android.
  • More baby steps are being taken in states’ fights to jam phone signals in and around prisons. This time around, a Senate subcommittee has sent a bill to the full Senate that would allow individual states to plead their jamming case to the FCC, which — as of right now, anyway — seems pretty lukewarm to the idea in general. [Via Phone Scoop]
  • Acer — like Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, RIM, Palm, Google, LG, Samsung, and your cousin Ralph — is opening an app store. It expects the store to be ready in the next few months as it ramps up the barrage of new WinMo devices it’s been pimping over the course of the year. [Via PHONE Magazine]
  • South Korea’s KT has confirmed that it’ll carry the iPhone at some point, though it’s refusing to spill details on exactly when or how that’ll go down. SKT’s apparently still in the mix, too, so we could end up without carrier exclusivity here. [Via Unwired View]

Motorola’s r765IS now available at Sprint, perfect for making Navy SEALs swoon with envy

Motorola's r765IS now available at Sprint, perfect for making Navy SEALs swoon with envy
You can take your frilly iPhones and pretty Pres and shove ‘em, because Motorola’s latest and, perhaps, beefiest handset is finally available at Sprint stores. The r765IS, announced back in April, is Mil Spec 810F rated, so no worries about dropping it — even into a bucket of salt water — and that IS on the end means “intrinsically safe,” so dial away even if you should happen to be standing in a room full of explosive gas, as we’ve been known to do from time to time. It also supports rather less exciting Nextel Direct Connect, NextMail to send voicemail as e-mail attachments, GPS navigation, and a variety of emergency calling modes for cutting through the bla bla bla. It’s a little less slinky looking than some other Motorola handsets we’ve seen lately, but we’d clip one to our belts before heading to our next waypoint/coffee shop — if only we had the requisite funding. A price of just under $2,000 ensures this will only be found in the mitts of the most well equipped mercenaries.

[Thanks, Brian]

Motorola Morrison engineering sketches emerge, has Android written all over it

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Okay, so maybe there’s not literally any text penciled in on these drawings, but if you’ve been looking for multiple angles of Motorola’s sure-to-be-forthcoming Morrison, these are about as good as it gets. Not surprisingly, the design here seems pretty conventional; for all intents and purposes, it’s just a QWERTY-packin’, full touchscreen slider smartphone with all the makings of a sub-$100 (on contract) Android offering. Hit the read link if you’re eager for more, and go on grab another handful of patience while you’re at it.

A3300 proves Motorola wants to keep teasing world with its best WinMo hardware

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

For some reason that can’t fully be explained (much less understood), Motorola’s made a bad habit lately of keeping all of its best Windows Mobile hardware more or less confined to Asia. Don’t get us wrong, that’s great for Asia — but for the rest of the world, getting a SURF without going through a series of importers, middlemen, pushers, weirdos, jerks, and college students just looking to make a little extra money on the side. Looks like that trend’s gonna continue, too, with the appearance of an alleged A3300 slate featuring a nice little 5 megapixel cam out back. Little else is known about the black beauty at this point, but with Moto’s seemingly singular focus on Android going forward, you’ve got to wonder how long these WinMo one-offs will continue.

[Thanks, Antony]

HTC sees revenue falling due to "delays in product launches"

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

HTC’s been on somewhat of a hot streak here lately, but word on the street has it that the aforesaid outfit may not be able to ship all of its forthcoming handsets on time. A new Wall Street Journal report on falling revenue in the HTC camp notes that an undisclosed amount of delays, a larger-than-anticipated drop in contract orders and lower-than-expected sales in China could lead to drooping income in the short term, and some analysts are pointing out that the company’s average selling price per phone is sliding due to looming Android competition from the likes of Motorola and Sony Ericsson. Aside from the Touch Pro2 that’ll probably never, ever land on Sprint, HTC has about a gazillion other rumored handsets on the horizon, but it’s hard to know for sure which “product launches” are expected to be stalled. So, is HTC secretly retooling a smattering of its handsets in order to stay one step ahead of SE and Moto? Or are old fashioned supply chain inefficiencies to blame?

Motorola Sholes Android phone for Verizon appears in the flesh

Friday, July 31st, 2009

Hm, maybe Motorola should have stuck with the render a while longer, cause this first shot of the Verizon-bound Sholes Android smartphone is looking mighty rough. Of course, it is just a blurrycam leak, and there’s a chance we’re not seeing this set’s true beauty, but honestly, we’re not sure even the most loving press photographer can make that red D-pad attractive. We’ll find out soon enough, if things go as planned.
