Motorola Sholes Android phone headed for Verizon?

On the lookout for the Motorola / Android / Verizon trifecta, we dug up some handset renders over at motofan.ru that seem to fit the bill quite well, thank you. According to the site, “Sholes” is a 3.7-inch (480 x 854) touchscreen device that will make its debut in the U.S. in October, featuring: 512MB storage, 256MB RAM, support for microSD / microSDHC up to 16 GB (an 8GB microSD ships with the phone), a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and the expected connectivity (USB, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi), audio, and video formats. And if the translation wasn’t hopelessly garbled, the source is also saying that this bad boy will support both CDMA and EVDO Rev A . No word on a price yet, but if this phone does make it to the realm of the real it’ll be nice to see a Moto / Android device that doesn’t look like it belongs in the hands of a tweenage girl (yeah, we said it, Morrison). See for yourself after the break.

Motorola’s MOTODEV "accelerates" Android development; isn’t a phone

We can’t fault Motorola for trying to get some developer tools out in the hands of Joe the App Developer before the company launches its own Android phone, but you’d think it would at least announce a handset before getting all dev tool happy. Motorola is now offering a beta version of its MOTODEV Studio for Android, a development environment that works alongside Google’s existing SDK, along with the new MOTODEV App Accelerator Program which gives devs early access to tools and better exposure for their apps. It all sounds fine and dandy, but “later this year” isn’t much to go on as far as an actual Motorola device to target. Come, Morrison, save us from this madness.

Boost’s Motorola i465 Clutch getting redone in graphite, available next Tuesday

If you’re feeling the need to text your face off on Boost Mobile but the original i465 Clutch’s maroon shade wasn’t your cup of tea, fret not — there’s a new shade in town. “Graphite,” which is really just a fancy way of saying “black,” is going to end up being the second color option for Motorola’s first QWERTY iDEN set when it launches next Tuesday for $129.99. Sounds expensive, but when you consider that Boost is commitment-free, it’s not that bad.

Motorola Morrison gets pictured running Android

Posted on 21st July 2009 by iorgus in Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , , ,

Well, we’ve already had a pretty good indication that Motorola’s Morrison QWERTY slider would be one of the company’s planned Android phones, and it looks like most all doubt has now been put to rest courtesy of this shot of what’s purported to be a Motorola employee’s very own Morrison. In addition to offering us a better look at a slightly more refined version of the phone, it also quite clearly shows it running Android, and it does indeed appear to be the real deal. As you can see above, it’s also still sporting that T-Mobile logo, though we’re still not hearing anything different than the previous rumors that it’s slated to launch on the carrier by the end of the year.

Motorola Ivory E18 luxury phone developed, scrapped

If you’re considering a luxury cellphone, you’ve probably given some thought to the Aura — either as an object of unattainable techno-lust, or as a way to lighten your wallet by a grand or two (don’t even get us started in Vertu). According to Mobile Review, Motorola wasn’t planning on stopping there: The Ivory E18 (a name which either evokes elegance or animal cruelty, depending on your POV) featured a slider with two movements (a short slide for function keys, and a longer for the T9 keypad), a small footprint, and and a 3 megapixel camera. The price? Well, for the stainless steel chassis you were looking at about €2,000 (about $2,821 at the moment). Also planned were phones with gold and platinum chassis, which would take the purchase price up to “several tens of thousands” of Euros. If Motorola wasn’t aware of the sheer silliness of such an extravagant phone, at least the carriers were — apparently it was lack of interest on their part that caused Moto to sack the project. Make sure you hit that read link for the whole story — in Bulgarian.

Motorola A45 Murano: a QA1 minus the 3G?

What would you get if you took Motorola’s QA1 Karma, gutted it of 3G, and dialed up the boxy factor a notch or three? We think you’d end up with something a lot like this, a phone alleged to be the A45 “Murano.” The A series is still a rarity in Moto’s lineup so we don’t have a ton of hardware to compare it with, but one member of the series is Verizon’s Rival — and you can definitely see a little familial resemblance there. Looks like it’ll have a 2 megapixel camera, but otherwise, this sucker’s a mystery; Motorola’s been making moves in Brazil lately, though, so we could definitely buy that this’ll end up popping in South America before we see it stateside.

Motorola’s ROKR ZN50 touchscreen slider could be a winner

Right around this time last year, we actually had lofty hopes that Motorola would get its handset business in gear and shock us all with an ultra-potent, completely refined smartphone. Here we sit today, still waiting. Still, we can’t pass up an opportunity to throw Moto’s hardware design team a bone, as the ROKR ZN50 is downright sexy from any angle. The music-centric, full touchscreen slider packs a 3.2-inch panel (427 x 240 resolution), automatic screen rotation, shake to switch tracks, a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack, Bluetooth stereo headset support, SRS WOW HD audio tech and a battery good for 30 hours of audio playback. There’s also a T-DMB TV tuner, 4GB of inbuilt memory, a microSDHC card slot, 3.2 megapixel camera, an e-dictionary and support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA. Sadly, it seems as if the phone is being reserved for the Korean market, but seriously, can you imagine this hitting North America with Android loaded on? Motorola: you’re this close.

Motorola’s dev programs reveal some Android table scraps

Posted on 7th July 2009 by iorgus in Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , ,

As 2009 blows by the halfway mark, questions loom about how, where, and when Motorola will lob the first volleys of its planned Android onslaught; Android phones are still rare enough to come by so that every device launch is huge news — but for Motorola in particular, the transition to Android is a hotly-anticipated one. The company’s still being extraordinarily tight-lipped on the subject, even through a series of Android-focused developer events it’s been holding around the country in recent weeks, but a few interesting tidbits have seeped out. Christy Wyatt, the company’s VP of software platforms, has gone on the record saying that its Android devices will focus on the mid- to high-end range of the market and will span both consumer and enterprise segments; Android certainly hasn’t been on the enterprise radar so far, so that’ll be interesting to see. The company’s also saying that some devices will focus on multimedia and / or messaging, which certainly falls in line with what we’ve heard and seen (with the rumored Morrison, for example). Ultimately, it’ll need to start opening up to programmers with hardware specifics if it wants them to target Moto handsets with any level of specificity, but in the meantime, it seems that they’re already developing quite a reputation in the community for really helping prospective devs out — a solid start. Now let’s just see about those handsets, eh?

Motorola MING A1890 "Greatwall" approved, Bluetooth SIG-style

Posted on 6th July 2009 by iorgus in Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , ,

It looks like most of the juicy details have been pulled, but thanks to the Bluetooth SIG, mobile-review seems to have gotten the inside line on Motorola’s latest spec bump for its MING series, the A1890 (codenamed “Greatwall,” though we’re guessing this won’t stick through to production — many of Moto’s handsets are listed by their codenames in the SIG’s database). The model — which, like its predecessors, will likely be confined to Asian retail — apparently had both GSM and CDMA / EV-DO listed in its brief specs, suggesting it might be a good fit for China Mobile’s 3G network with a little roaming capability thrown in for good measure. The screen’s apparently still QVGA, but it’s got a 3 megapixel camera with business card recognition (a feature that carries over from existing models), GPS (another carry-over), and a built-in PDF reader — and actually, now that we’re reading over it, our enthusiasm has been thoroughly tempered. How about 5 megapixels, WVGA, Android, and global availability, Moto?

TracFone’s $45 Straight Talk unlimited plan punishes you with brutal hardware

Posted on 2nd July 2009 by iorgus in Uncategorized | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

They say “there’s no such thing as a free lunch.” They also say “there’s no such thing as an unlimited contract-free $45 monthly unlimited plan that offers awesome phones,” so we’re not terribly surprised to see that TracFone’s new blowout offering — dubbed Straight Talk — is rife with ancient Motorolas (with a RAZR V3a thrown in for good measure, of course) and an LG flip that we’re pretty sure we saw McClane use in the first Die Hard. Then again, the plan becomes the one of the cheapest for unlimited voice and text anywhere — and if you’re less heavy on the minutes you can even step down to 1,000 minutes and 1,000 texts for $30 — so we’ll let it slide. But seriously, TracFone, we expect a V9 by 2012.
