Huawei starting its Android march with T-Mobile ‘Pulse’ in Europe?

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Huawei’s been talking up its impending play for a share of the Android pie for most of this year, but where’s the beef? There’s nothing in the market just yet, but that might be about to change with details on a so-called “Pulse” for some of T-Mobile’s European networks in the coming months. The Chinese manufacturer specializes in the value segment — a side effect of its brand not really commanding any premium outside Asia — and the Pulse could be a big winner there thanks to an unlocked price said to be around €250 ($356). That’s an impressively low figure in light of the supposed 3.5-inch display, full HSPA, GPS (of course), WiFi, and an HVGA display like all proper Android sets of the moment. Dutch site tweakers.net says this is all confirmed by way of a retailer that pegs the device for T-Mobile Netherlands in early October, which means the Heros and Galaxys of the world have precious little time to capitalize before these guys swoop in and undercut ‘em all by a few bucks.

Nokia's 5800 Navigation Edition finding its way to stores soon

The Garmin-Asus nuvifone is finally inbound to domestic retailers, but it’s taken so many wrong turns on the way that it’s given the competition plenty of time to catch up and prepare their own nav-enabled mobile offerings. TomTom’s iPhone kit is due any minute, and now Nokia is getting into the game, announcing the 5800 Navigation Edition. Instead of coming with music it comes with a pre-loaded copy of Ovi Maps and lifetime licenses for voice-guided driving and walking directions. It also includes a car charger and a handy-dandy auto mounting kit, all swingingly demonstrated in a video below, and is set to ship sometime in the third quarter of this year (i.e. soon) at an expected retail of €285 (about $410).

Bell’s Palm Pre commercial couldn’t be more Apple if it had an Orba Squara soundtrack

Friday, August 21st, 2009

Far from being creepy this time around, the latest Palm Pre ad — this one specifically for Bell’s Canadian customer base — is familiar. Very familiar. Plain white backdrop? Check. Peppy male narrator? Check. Hip, upbeat music? Check. Mysterious hands showing off mobile apps and other smartphone capabilities? Check. Side-by-side comparison videos after the break. Hey, at least this one isn’t gonna creep you out.

T-Mobile Sidekick LX 2009 down to $175

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Would-be Sidekick LX 2009 owners have one less reason to keep dragging their feet this week with the dropping of the model’s price (in both Carbon and Orchid variants, of course) down to $175 on contract after discounts from the original retail price of $250. We’re not sure what’s ultimately responsible for the price cut beyond the usual ultra-rapid retail shelf aging process and the gnat-like attention span of consumers like ourselves, but either way, the move helps put the high-end featurephone back in line with some of its contemporaries (we’re sorry, but running more than a BlackBerry Tour or an iPhone 3GS on subsidy makes about as much sense as mail-order beef). So, does this tip the scale for anyone out there? Who’s taking the plunge?

Samsung’s WEP870 Bluetooth headset comes with earbuds, bundles of joy

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Nothing too exhilarating here, but if you’re looking for something new to sit atop the peak on your ear, Samsung’s got a new trio it’d love for you to consider. The most interesting of the three is undoubtedly the WEP870, which marries a noise-canceling Bluetooth mono headset (with BT music streaming) to a set of earbuds. As with the less thrilling WEP850 and WEP470, this one also features multi-connection technology in order to pair with up to two BT devices at once. The 870 steps things up with an LCD screen to display battery level, call status and BT connection status, while the other two handle calls and little else. All three are available for purchase right now for $89.99 (WEP870), $69.99 (WEP850) and $39.99 (WEP470).

HTC prepping better, stronger firmware for Hero

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

The Hero might not pack a 1GHz Snapdragon or anything awesome like that, but that’s no excuse for it to lag its older cousins in day-to-day use. Sure, you’ve got Sense on there — but HTC’s got to keep things snappy, particularly in light of how well TouchFLO 3D performs on the newest batch of devices. Fortunately, we’ve followed up with HTC in light of a recent SlashGear report that there’s fresh firmware on the way, and indeed, it’s been confirmed — details on the exact contents are sketchy at best, but we’re cautiously heartened by the “performance” part of the “performance improvements and bug fixes” statement we’ve received. We’ll see just how much better it gets.

LG BL40 Chocolate Touch gets the hands-on treatment… on video!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

We’ve still got our hopes up for an August 23rd launch date, but in the meantime we do have a, well, tasty video of LG’s BL40 Chocolate Touch to tide us over. As you might have guessed, the UI is of the 3D S-Class variety. The accelerometer looks pretty snappy, and watching video seems to be a joy on the 4-inch, 21:9 display. Of course, we could give you a scene-by-scene recap, but we’d hate to spoil this Oscar-worthy production for you. Peep it yourself after the break.

Layar augmented reality app now available globally, lets you hunt down tweeps with cold, calculated precision

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Following a Netherlands-exclusive release back in June, SPRXmobile has now taken its so-called Layar “Reality Browser” for Android to the global stage and advanced it to version 2.0 in the process. Perhaps the first commercial augmented reality app to launch on a large scale, Layar’s got a good amount of momentum behind it — the company claims that 100 developers are already hard at work developing reality layers that users can toggle, and an additional 500 developers are being added into the mix with the latest release. Version 2.0 adds favorite layers (because we’re sure you’ll be stalking friends and foes all too often using the Tweetmondo layer), map and list views, and enhanced search capabilities, but the real secret to Layar’s power might ultimately lie in the third-party ecosystem if they can get enough content providers on board.

We grabbed Layar off the Market and took it for a quick spin; we’re having trouble getting it to aim correctly, though Google Sky Map is having the same issues, so we’re fairly certain that we’re dealing with a phone or location problem rather than a Layar one. The key thing with an app like this is going to be speed and fluidity, and even on our Magic’s relatively lightweight 528MHz core, it’s plenty usable. The Google-powered Layar local search — arguably the most important reality layer bundled with the software — is a little annoying to use, primarily because the search box has no history or suggestion capability which means you’ve got to type out a full search every time you want to use it. Ultimately, though, the app’s very young (as is this whole category of technology, for that matter) and we’re stoked to see where this goes over the coming months.

Plucky little iPhone 3GS counfounds expectations, tops Japanese sales for July

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Well, look at that: The iPhone 3GS 32GB was the best-selling phone in Japan for the month of July, according to a survey being reported by a number of sites, including Electronista and Mainichi Daily News. Not bad for a handset that doesn’t even support 1seg TV, huh? Trailing behind the aforementioned handset at number nine (and the only other American model to make the top ten) is a little something called the iPhone 3GS 16GB. Of course, the mobile market in Japan features plenty of virtually identical phones that manufacturers assign different model numbers to, depending on carrier — so we’re going to take this with a grain of salt. But still, we have to wonder what, exactly, to attribute Apple’s new found Japanese popularity to. Maybe it’s because they got the phone a mere month after the Stateside 3GS launch, while the hype machine was still in motion? Or maybe someone juked the stats? We can’t be sure just yet, but we do have the top ten for you — in handy list form — after the break.
