If you want to watch live hockey games played by NHL teams not owned by RIM’s Jim Balsillie — that would be all of them, by the way — you need look no further than the warm glow of your Storm’s display now that Verizon has brought its V CAST Video service to the device. Starting today, users will be able to download a dedicated VCAST Video application to their Storms, bringing a host of feature-length and live programming that makes us thank our lucky stars for high-limit data plans. Sure, it’ll set you back $10 a month and kill productivity — but isn’t wasting money and time what life is really all about?

That shot of an Alltel-branded Tour in the wild turned out to be stone-cold legit seeing how the regional carrier (what’s left of it following the Verizon acquisition, anyhow) is now offering the phone for $200 — the same price you’ll find on Sprint or Verizon. That’s cool and all, but we know the real reason you’re reading this is that they’ve also launched the Samsung Glint, a low-cost flip with a VGA cam, stereo Bluetooth, and availability in both pink and blue. Both devices are available now, though we’ve yet to see ‘em show up on the carrier’s site so you might want to make some phone calls before running down to the store.

Sounds like RIM’s trying to do more than just bring the woeful BlackBerry browser up to par with the competition — Boy Genius Report says Waterloo’s trying to leap way out in front by building in full Flash and Silverlight support. BGR says it’ll be full Flash, not Flash Lite or the Open Screen Project’s mobile Flash 10 implementation, but don’t get too excited: it’ll be next summer before RIM ships devices fast enough to handle it, and even then things may be delayed since they’ll need HSPA or LTE data speeds to pull it off. Hey, maybe in the meantime all those engineers could maybe work on things like properly rendering a text page? Just an idea.

It shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that
RIM is doing pretty well even in the face of an economic downturn, but it looks like it’s been doing
really well — at least according to Fortune, which has just named the Canadian company the fastest growing firm
in the world. That’s apparently based on a combination of profits, turnover, and investment return over three years which, in RIM’s case, translates an 84% growth in profits in the past three years, a 77% growth in revenue, and a total return of 45%. It’s also actually the first time RIM has made the list, although that’s at least partly due to the fact that Fortune didn’t include non-US firms last time around.

We’re not sure why we didn’t hear more about this way back at RIM’s WES conference way back in May, but it was apparently mentioned by VP Antoine Boucher at the time that they’re working on a Bluetooth-enabled watch. Furthermore, it’s said to be more advanced than the models Sony Ericsson has put forth so far, featuring streaming audio (3.5mm jack on the watch, perhaps?) and Twitter / Facebook updates in addition to the usual things like caller ID and text messages. Note that the image floating around today of this thing isn’t real — it’s just a Sony Ericsson MBW-100 with a swapped logo — so it remains to be seen what this magical wrist accessory will look like, assuming it’s real and coming to retail. It seems Boucher also mentioned a high-end Bluetooth headset codenamed “Alpha 1″ that’ll allow you to stream music and get navigation directions through some sort of totally awesome silicone earpiece boasted to possibly be “the best solution on the market.” It’s pretty hard to pique a lot of interest these days with something as vanilla and ubiquitous as a headset, but at any rate, it’s interesting to see the depth of RIM’s apparent commitment to the accessory market right now.

BlackBerry’s newest consumer-class QWERTY smartphone — the Curve 8520 — seemed like a lock to launch on Vodafone UK on account of some scanned advertising a little while back, and sure enough, here it is. Considering that you can get virtually any phone in your wildest dreams for free on Voda as long as you pair it with an appropriately pricey contract, we’re not sure why you’d take up their offer of the 8520, really — especially considering that it tops out at EDGE speeds in a country where EDGE-only phones are antiquities better suited for museums than pockets. We guess that’d be what the “Why get this” section on the carrier’s product page is for, eh?

There’s little doubt that the Storm 2 is real, but where’s it going, exactly? Not long after its debut in some 1960s-era Verizon mainframe that occupies two and a half acres of rural real estate in an underground bunker in North Dakota (we totally fabricated that, by the way), the phone has shown up in a Vodafone Germany computer of similar vintage and unfathomable size. RIM’s latest attempt at the touchscreen craze is undoubtedly being pursued with some vigor by the world’s top-tier carriers, and it makes sense that all of the original model’s launch partners — Vodafone Germany included — would have first dibs. No word on a launch date, but we take it as a good sign that everyone’s feverishly entering this stuff into inventory databases now.

That new BlackBerry Curve 8520 for T-Mobile is in the house, sucking down EDGE data like it’s going out of style (oh, right, it is). For a device that can be scored for $50 at Walmart as of tomorrow ($130 at T-Mobile stores), this is a surprisingly solid handset. The keyboard is classic BlackBerry goodness, and the overall heft gives us at least a little bit of assurance that the phone can hold up to wear and tear better than its predecessors. Most of the changes are for the better, like a trio of media keys up top and the rubberized sides, but we’re not completely sold on the touchpad. It works great when it works, but if it’s too clean or our thumb is at the exact wrong moisture level, we found that we kind of “stuck” to the pad instead of gliding across it. A bit of texturing could go a long way. We also found the QVGA screen to be pretty dim, which is particularly unfortunate in light of RIM’s higher-end, high-res wonders, but it’s certainly passable. We’re planning on spending some more time with the handset, testing that EDGE network to the limit, giving UMA time to handle some of legendary conversational stylings, and seeing how many Engadget Podcast episodes we can narcissistically cram onto the bundled 1GB microSD card.
In speaking with RIM, it’s quite clear that the decision to go EDGE was primarily based on price, along with the fact that T-Mobile’s 3G rollout is still lacking — it’s still a head scratcher to us, though. The spokesperson also seemed pretty confident that the new touchpad interface is the way of the future, and we get the feeling the BlackBerry’s legendary trackball isn’t long for this world. Check out a quick video hands-on after the break, or you could opt for some fine unboxing shots below.

It may not be the 5th of the month just yet, but that’s not stopping T-Mobile from going ahead and posting its product info page for the upcoming BlackBerry 8520 with a big, fat “Coming Soon” right next to it. Everything here is pretty much exactly as you’d expect it: EDGE data, WiFi, 2 megapixel camera, microSD expansion, and a rated 4.5 hours of talk time with 17 days of standby — the only thing we’re really missing then (besides 3G, of course) is a Buy button, which we’re figuring will show up any day now.

We all know there ain’t no party like a Super Walmart party, ’cause the Super Walmart party don’t stop. Aiding its cause in being the go-to place for night owls and bargain hunting insomniacs is the fact that it’s apparently selling T-Mobile’s newest BlackBerry ahead of the August 5th street date. Don’t believe us? Jump on past the break for an unboxing video, and afterwards, feel free to call your nearest five Wally Worlds until you find one ready and willing to take your $48.88 (on contract).
[Thanks, Alex]
