In its brief three-model run so far, HTC’s already built a storied history of odd color options for its Android phones: brown on the G1, “merlot” on the myTouch 3G, and now, a sublime pink for the Hero that we’re finally seeing in the wild. Love it or hate it, Android fans, be real with yourselves: if it was somehow the only Hero you had access to, you’d take it in a heartbeat.

It’s still hard to believe that Nokia’s already upstaging the N97 with the N97 mini just two months after the big guy shipped, but here we are, staring at the FCC documentation. There’s not much to go on here besides this label-location drawing, which is marked with a 1:1 scale — allowing us to set our regular N97 down next to it and show you just how little Nokia achieved with all that development money. Check it after the break, along with another pic of the mini the inimitable Eldar Murtazin just posted to his blog.

Smartphone sales may be growing at a steady rate these days but, if NPD’s latest numbers are any indication, it looks like they still have quite a ways to go before they become the norm among cellphone users. As the market research group found during its latest survey, less expensive featurephones accounted for an impressive 72% of all new handset sales in the US during the second quarter of the year, which is only a 5% drop even in the face of a 47% jump in smartphone sales (to 28% market share) over the same quarter last year — a 14% jump in overall handset sales accounts for some of that discrepancy. According to NPD’s numbers, the LG enV2 (pictured above) and Samsung Rant were among the best selling featurephones during the quarter, while the iPhone 3G and Blackberry Curve were the best selling smartphones. Other interesting tidbits include the fact that the average selling price for a phone rose 4% over the year to $87, and that WiFi capability is now found on 20% of new handsets, while 26% of new phones have touchscreens (compared to 35% with QWERTY keyboards).

Eldar Murtazin at mobile-review teased us with that shot of Nokia’s RX-51 / N900 Maemo 5 tablet earlier today, and now he’s back in force with a detailed preview. We’re talking tons of hardware pictures and screenshots of what stands to be the standard-bearer for all Nokia devices going forward, and while we’d love to tell you all about how impressed we are with what we’re seeing of Maemo 5 and how disappointed we are in the Rover’s resistive touchscreen, we won’t hold you back — hit the read link and dive right in.

The Hero might not pack a 1GHz Snapdragon or anything awesome like that, but that’s no excuse for it to lag its older cousins in day-to-day use. Sure, you’ve got Sense on there — but HTC’s got to keep things snappy, particularly in light of how well TouchFLO 3D performs on the newest batch of devices. Fortunately, we’ve followed up with HTC in light of a recent SlashGear report that there’s fresh firmware on the way, and indeed, it’s been confirmed — details on the exact contents are sketchy at best, but we’re cautiously heartened by the “performance” part of the “performance improvements and bug fixes” statement we’ve received. We’ll see just how much better it gets.

Korea’s Pantech has always played second fiddle (well, third fiddle, we suppose) to global giants Samsung and LG, but somehow, the little guy has managed to be cash flow positive for the past eight quarters of financial results since undertaking a corporate restructuring. To further strengthen its position, it’s in the process of swapping some outstanding debt for equity — and one of those creditors just happens to be Qualcomm, which has a booming Korean business and enjoys tight relationships with many of the local players. This sounds like it won’t really have any material effect on Pantech’s day-to-day operations, since Qualcomm says it wants to stay passive and won’t move to install any management or board members; that being said, it could end up with as much as 15 percent of Pantech’s common stock, which is a nice little chunk. We’re guessing this means we won’t be seeing many Pantechs with Broadcom basebands, eh?

Remember that nameless midrange flip from Nokia that the FCC outed complete with AT&T branding not long ago? Well, we’ve now got a name to put with the face: 6350. The good folks at the Bluetooth SIG have come through once again, revealing a picture — admittedly a small one — of the phone that we can safely identify as the same thing we’d seen getting FCC approval a little while back. We don’t have a launch date yet, but the SIG confirms that it’s an HSDPA-equipped piece with a 2 megapixel camera — in other words, nothing that’s going to knock your socks off, unless your socks are mysteriously knocked off by 2 megapixel cameras, in which case you need to check your socks.

We’d still venture to say that all signs are pointing toward an iPhone launch on China Unicom before too long, but one key element of the launch — Unicom’s upfront buy — is now in question. A spokesman for China’s third-largest carrier (which is an amazingly low rank considering they’ve got about as many subscribers as Verizon and AT&T combined) has denied earlier reports that they’ve stockpiled five million handsets in preparation for launch, saying that negotiations with Apple are still ongoing. We imagine that when you’re dealing with a nine-figure subscriber count, any hardware negotiation is complex, tense, and filled with counteroffers, so there’s no telling how much longer this process could take.

Wanna spice up your next poker night? Meminos would love to help you out there with its deck of iPhone-inspired playing cards. They certainly look the part, as at first blush we thought we were dealing with an app, and are novel enough to appeal even to our cold and cynical souls. Another shot lies after the break, and you can grab your own deck for $25 through the read link.

Hey, T-Mobile, allow us to hit you up with some knowledge, if you would. Take a quick gander up north of the border, where our dear friends on Rogers have reduced both the Dream (your G1) and the Magic (your myTouch 3G) to just $79.99 on a three-year deal — and that’s in Canadian dollars, which works out to $74 in greenbacks. Granted, yes, we understand that a three-year deal is a full 12 months longer than an old-fashioned American two-year deal, but still, you’re going to have to forgive us if we start working on our visa applications. Coincidentally, we know there’s a version of the Hero kicking around that’d work swimmingly on Rogers; we don’t mean to start any rumors, but… oh heck, who are we kidding, of course we’re trying to start rumors.
[Thanks, Ilia]
