Poor
Symbian. Sony Ericsson’s been giving you some hot play with its
Satio smartphone, but lately it seems Nokia wants little to do with you, always throwing a cold shoulder and mentioning what a great guy that
Maemo dude is. Now, according to rumors from the (still pink) German Financial Times, Nokia is looking to drop Symbian OS altogether and move to Maemo wholesale, powering not just its internet tablets but also its smartphones, the first of which is due in “the next few weeks” — possibly referring to the
RX-51 Rover that’s been out and about lately. According to the report, the Symbian OS just can’t keep up with the younger players these days; “far too cumbersome to work with.” Nokia has issued a typical no comment, but interestingly last night’s mention of a “
alliance” between Microsoft and Nokia for the creation of Office for Nokia phones made no explicit mention of Office for Symbian. Intrigue; we love it.
Update: As Reggie has pointed out in the comments, Peter Schneider, Nokia’s Maemo marketing guru, has put the brakes on this rumor via Twitter. “No, Nokia is not replacing Symbian with Maemo. Symbian and Maemo will continue to coexist.” So much for intrigue, and romance.

We’ve seen more than enough evidence surface to convince us that HTC Touch Pro2 is making its way over to Sprint at some point, and now this morning comes two interesting piece of information each pegging a release date for early September. Only problem is, the pair can’t seem to agree on exactly what that day will be. Phone Arena’s gotten its hands on an alleged leaked document hailing straight from the Now Network that claims Thursday, September 3rd is the lucky day, while on the flip side, Engadget reader Louis wrote in to let us know of an apparent reply he got from Sprint customer service that told him it’d be up for sale on Tuesday, September 8th. That last one’s pretty peculiar, given the carrier’s yet to even confirm the device’s existence, but that hasn’t necessarily stopped blabbing reps before. With both of these days now less than a month away, chances are we won’t be waiting too much longer to know for sure.

We’ve been hearing about Verizon’s upcoming HTC Whitestone for a while now, and it looks like a new pic and specs for the upcoming dual-mode CDMA / GSM Touch Diamond2 variant have leaked out. Seems like a mixed bag — the revised case with a larger 3.6-inch WVGA display is impressive, but inside you’re looking at Windows Mobile 6.1 running on a 528MHz Qualcomm processor with 256MB of RAM, so you’ve certainly lived through this experience before. That’s pretty much the same case with the HTC Mega, which also leaked today: although it’ll ship with WinMo 6.5 and that hot new version of TouchFLO 2D, it’s a lower-end device with a 2.8-inch QVGA display, a three megapixel camera and yet another 528MHz Qualcomm proc with 256MB of RAM running the show. Oh, and just to round things out, there’s a pic of the Dopod-branded HTC Tachi, which probably means this one’s headed for China. Always nice to put a face to a name, though isn’t it? Pics of the Mega and Tachi at the read link.

Hm, maybe Motorola should have stuck with the render a while longer, cause this first shot of the Verizon-bound Sholes Android smartphone is looking mighty rough. Of course, it is just a blurrycam leak, and there’s a chance we’re not seeing this set’s true beauty, but honestly, we’re not sure even the most loving press photographer can make that red D-pad attractive. We’ll find out soon enough, if things go as planned.

Let’s go through the steps together, shall we? A “senior member” forum poster on the xda-developers forums has posted the above pic as proof that the HTC Hero is coming to the US on October 11th — a claim he’s been making as far back as April, but this is the first time he’s brought a picture with him. The poster says he works for a wireless developer firm, and while this picture can easily be faked, we don’t think it’s necessarily that much of a stretch. Let’s look at some of the other phones listed. There’s “Samsung Q (Android),” which could provide a missing link between the InstinctQ and the company’s mysterious Android phone that was supposed to be out on Sprint and T-Mobile by now. BlackBerry Aries is the CDMA version the Curve 8520, and traditionally RIM’s CDMA devices wind up on both Sprint and Verizon. The LG LX610 / Lotus 2 is a new one to us, but Lotus seems to have been well-received for Sprint. So to pull all that data together, if this list is the real deal, we’d say it came from Now Network company. This is the sort of phone Dan Hesse would be glad to have waited for, isn’t it?

At this point we’re not sure why Dell won’t just come out and say it’s working on a smartphone, but for whatever reason the company’s executives keep hinting around it. Case in point: Dell consumer division VP Ron Garriques, who told analysts yesterday that the company would “work with the top three to four” carriers “and see what their needs are.” That’s only slightly more concrete that what we’ve been hearing Michael Dell say for a while now, but apparently Ron got a little more specific: reports from the event also say he indicated that plans are being drawn up to launch products in the US, Asia, and Europe. We’d love a full transcript to figure out exactly what went down, but remember that Mr. Garriques here is the ex-head of Motorola’s mobile devices unit, so he’s got some experience cranking out handsets for every market. Just a note, though, Ron: if you ever pull an Adamo on us and reveal a product without specs, you are so not invited to sit at our table for lunch anymore.

Looks like RIM and Verizon are getting things in place for the Storm 2 — this picture posted on CrackBerry purportedly shows an entry for retail mockup units of RIM touchscreen sequel in Verizon’s inventory system that seems to confirm the rumored 9550 model number is the real deal. Considering how leaky RIM’s been lately this doesn’t surprise us any too much, but we’re still waiting to see a Storm 2 that actually functions before we say an actual launch is imminent.

You haven’t forgotten about that BlackBerry Storm 2, have you? The Boy Genius Report is claiming it’s gotten device specs for RIM’s touchscreen-centric maven, also reportedly called the 9550, and while not surprising (and not confirmed), according to his source the CDMA device will be sporting 802.11b/g (which we already sort of knew), a 3.2 megapixel camera, 360 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, and BlackBerry OS 5.0. If that’s not enough, the site’s also saying a GSM version of the original, with 3G in tow, does exist as the 9520 and is possibly on track for release soon on AT&T and Rogers. All nice fodder for dreams, but we’re not getting our hopes up until something more official rears its SurePress-laden head.

Ready for even more rumors about Windows Mobile 7 and Microsoft’s mysterious “Pink” smartphone project? Good, cause we’ve got a few — and the first is potentially huge. CNET’s Mary Jo Foley says her best understanding of “Pink” is now that it’s a Microsoft-branded phone running a custom UI on top of Windows Mobile 7, developed by what’s left of the Danger team and targeted at the Sidekick market. Yep, Microsoft-branded — as in, the exact thing Microsoft has been denying for ages now. What’s more, Redmond wouldn’t be letting third parties use this new UI — Pink would be manufactured only by Sharp or Motorola, who’ve made Sidekicks in the past. It all makes sense, even if it does feel a bit like MS is knifing its partners in the back — companies like HTC and Samsung have been equally aggressive in layering their own UIs like TouchFLO 3D and TouchWiz on top of WinMo, but it’s another thing entirely to compete against Microsoft itself, especially now that AdWeek says Microsoft’s selected an agency to develop a Pink ad campaign. Yeah, things are starting to get a little wild — we haven’t even mentioned the open questions of whether the Zune HD is running Tegra because it’s based on Windows Mobile 7 Chassis 1, or whether Pink will launch on Verizon, or whether Zune will appear on other phones, or… you get the idea. Hey Microsoft — you want to clear any of this up by shipping some products?

It’s pretty much the eve of Apple’s big WWDC press conference, and Daring Fireball’s John Gruber is back at the eleventh hour to chime in some more on his previous (and perhaps well-informed) iPhone predictions. He sticks to his previous wagers — twice the CPU speed, twice the RAM, a heavy emphasis on a new video camera (no word on if there’s an additional front-facing one), and $199 / $299 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively — but additionally chimes in that the new device’s codename is… drumroll, please… the iPhone 3GS, which he surmises is probably going to be the final product name, as well. Kind of a yawner, if you ask us, but it’d sell like gangbusters no matter what it was called. As for that lowered-tiered iPhone, he’s expecting it to be the current 3G model with a price drop to $99. Also on the table is iPhone tethering, which we already know was built into OS 3.0, likely for a fee chosen by each carrier. Teasing farther into the future, he suggests “Marble,” codename for an OS X visual overhaul, and the tablet are very much real projects but that there’s little to no chance it’ll be at WWDC. No clue what the “S” stands for (speed, perhaps?), but at this point we’re pretty much counting the minutes to tomrorow’s keynote, and our clocks can’t tick much faster.
