If you spell happiness T-W-E-L-V-E M-E-G-A-P-I-X-E-L-S, you’re looking in the wrong place. Samsung’s SCH-W830 — along with its SPH-W8300 and SPH-W8350 cousins for other networks — finds inner peace through the simplicity and beauty of a scintillating light show set around an ultra-low res display. You’ve only got two megapixels to work with around back, but seriously, who has time to snap pictures when you’re being dazzled by a seemingly endless array of colored lights? Between that and the spring-loaded opening mechanism, this is a flip fit for the fiddler / fidgeter in all of us, and it’s available now on South Korea’s LGT, SKT, and KTF.

Nothing too exhilarating here, but if you’re looking for something new to sit atop the peak on your ear, Samsung’s got a new trio it’d love for you to consider. The most interesting of the three is undoubtedly the WEP870, which marries a noise-canceling Bluetooth mono headset (with BT music streaming) to a set of earbuds. As with the less thrilling WEP850 and WEP470, this one also features multi-connection technology in order to pair with up to two BT devices at once. The 870 steps things up with an LCD screen to display battery level, call status and BT connection status, while the other two handle calls and little else. All three are available for purchase right now for $89.99 (WEP870), $69.99 (WEP850) and $39.99 (WEP470).

We knew the Gravity 2 was coming, but when it was announced, T-Mobile stayed coy about pricing and availability beyond saying “August.” Turns out that “August” means today, because a quick visit to the carrier’s website now lets you get in on the text-heavy landscape slider for a mere $29.99 on contract after rebate in your choice of “Metallic Pumpkin” or the arguably more sophisticated “Berry Mauve.” Don’t expect the world — the camera’s just 2 megapixels and the screen is going to cause frustration, eyestrain, injury, and / or death if you try to browse actual websites — but at least you’ve got GPS, AWS 3G, and some of the more spacious texting you’ll find at this price point. Just don’t drop it, because you’ll learn how it gets its name real quick.

Its website is still showing a Coming Soon page for us, but the Wall Street Journal is reporting via Hong Kong — China Mobile’s hometown — that the world’s largest carrier’s app store is now live. The service, which offers the usual array of apps and media that you’d expect of any self-respecting fee-based carrier content deck, is said to support some ten handsets out of the gate from Nokia, Samsung, and LG. Mysteriously missing from that list is anything that’d be running OMS, though we suppose that makes sense since the first OPhones aren’t coming to market in an official capacity until next month.

At some point, every form factor will have been explored, every phone will be capable of transferring data faster than we can consume it, and every possible non-silly combination of words will have been used to create model names. Amazingly, we think we might be approaching that apocalyptic point, because Samsung’s “Honey Bubble” slider crossed the wires in the past few days. Yes, that’s right: Honey Bubble. The camera’s only 2 megapixels, but like virtually all Korean domestic models, it’s at least got a T-DMB tuner, media player, and Bluetooth — and a positively unforgettable name, for better or worse. No word on availability, but our understanding is that you’ll be able to pay for it in gumdrops and children’s laughter.

It’s already gone through more than its share of name changes, but it looks like Sprint’s upcoming Samsung m850 Dash, most recently known as the Instinct S50, has now apparently found one that’s stuck: the Instinct HD. No word if that means it’ll actually handle HD video in one way or another, of course, nor is there any word on anything like a price or release date — although with the FCC business out of the way, it seems like this one could be getting fully official sooner rather than later.

Samsung has been teasing us with its
Blue Earth solar-powered smartphone since February, and now it’s showing us a bit more of that sultry photovoltaic skin a mere day after its budget-minded solar brother, the E1107, came out
into the light. This cerulean one has finally been given an official name, the S7750, but we’re still missing many bits if crucial information, including how effective that solar panel will be in the real world, when it will be available in that real world, how much real money it will cost, and how many eco-chic celebs will be spotted talking on these while drunkenly driving their Priora (it’s Latin, dig) into crowds of spectators — all bits of info we can’t wait to learn.

Everyone wants to be environmentally friendly — and really, it’s getting to the point where it’s outwardly irresponsible (and kinda stupid) if you’re not taking steps to reduce your footprint and help others do the same. Thing is, the impetus to take it easy on Mother Earth comes at precisely the same time that gadgets are playing a more important role in our lives than they ever have before, and historically, gadgets haven’t been perfect angels. Minerals needed in circuitry contribute to harsh mining operations, haphazardly discarded devices and batteries leave landfills toxic, and chargers blow through untold gigawatts in wasted power every year.

Sure, a cellphone made out of 80 percent recycled materials might be considered pretty environmentally friendly, but a cellphone with a built-in solar panel? Now that’s something with the potential to make Al Gore cry. Enter the Samsung E11077. It’s solar panel-equipped back cover comes in at 1.2-mm thin, and is said to revive a dead battery after just 15 minutes in the sun. Besides the FM radio and flashlight features, the only other noteworthy addition is an “Eco” profile, that essentially just changes screen brightness and shuts the Bluetooth off. If you’re interested, the cost of entry is a reasonable $59, but you’ll probably have to find an importer, as we don’t expect this tree hugger to land stateside any time soon.
[Thanks, Vadik]
