We knew the Gravity 2 was coming, but when it was announced, T-Mobile stayed coy about pricing and availability beyond saying “August.” Turns out that “August” means today, because a quick visit to the carrier’s website now lets you get in on the text-heavy landscape slider for a mere $29.99 on contract after rebate in your choice of “Metallic Pumpkin” or the arguably more sophisticated “Berry Mauve.” Don’t expect the world — the camera’s just 2 megapixels and the screen is going to cause frustration, eyestrain, injury, and / or death if you try to browse actual websites — but at least you’ve got GPS, AWS 3G, and some of the more spacious texting you’ll find at this price point. Just don’t drop it, because you’ll learn how it gets its name real quick.

At some point, every form factor will have been explored, every phone will be capable of transferring data faster than we can consume it, and every possible non-silly combination of words will have been used to create model names. Amazingly, we think we might be approaching that apocalyptic point, because Samsung’s “Honey Bubble” slider crossed the wires in the past few days. Yes, that’s right: Honey Bubble. The camera’s only 2 megapixels, but like virtually all Korean domestic models, it’s at least got a T-DMB tuner, media player, and Bluetooth — and a positively unforgettable name, for better or worse. No word on availability, but our understanding is that you’ll be able to pay for it in gumdrops and children’s laughter.

Everyone wants to be environmentally friendly — and really, it’s getting to the point where it’s outwardly irresponsible (and kinda stupid) if you’re not taking steps to reduce your footprint and help others do the same. Thing is, the impetus to take it easy on Mother Earth comes at precisely the same time that gadgets are playing a more important role in our lives than they ever have before, and historically, gadgets haven’t been perfect angels. Minerals needed in circuitry contribute to harsh mining operations, haphazardly discarded devices and batteries leave landfills toxic, and chargers blow through untold gigawatts in wasted power every year.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that leaked lineup documents suggest Rogers has an eye on Nokia’s Surge; Rogers has a pretty good relationship with Nokia, after all, and the Surge is the kind of device that pretty much any text-savvy carrier with an established rapport with Nokia would be looking into. What might be more of a surprise is that they’ll apparently be launching it as the 6790 Surge — Nokia’s global designation for the device — as opposed to the simpler “Surge” preferred by AT&T. After AT&T’s move we’d taken 6790 as more of a European branding, but hey, props to Rogers for keeping it real and letting Nokia roll with its traditional scheme. No word on availability yet, but we’ll allegedly be looking at CAD $89.99 (about $83) on a new three-year agreement when it finally does launch.

If you thought that “Chianti” was an odd name for a Samsung phone on Sprint… well, the new name isn’t really any less odd. PhoneArena appears to have obtained shots of the upcoming M560 Reclaim, which seems to be a wide portrait QWERTY slider in the same vein as the Propel (among others). It’s got a landscape QVGA display, 2 megapixel cam, and GPS — but as the name sorta implies, the emphasis here is going to be on environmental friendliness, which could mean that it’s using the same corn-based shell as the E200 Eco. Tasty! It’s been spotted both in blue and green, though it’s unknown if those will be the actual launch colors, how much it’ll run, or when we might have the pleasure.

What would you get if you took Motorola’s QA1 Karma, gutted it of 3G, and dialed up the boxy factor a notch or three? We think you’d end up with something a lot like this, a phone alleged to be the A45 “Murano.” The A series is still a rarity in Moto’s lineup so we don’t have a ton of hardware to compare it with, but one member of the series is Verizon’s Rival — and you can definitely see a little familial resemblance there. Looks like it’ll have a 2 megapixel camera, but otherwise, this sucker’s a mystery; Motorola’s been making moves in Brazil lately, though, so we could definitely buy that this’ll end up popping in South America before we see it stateside.

Remember that slightly stouter but still rather obelisky-looking Black Label cousin of LG’s BL40 we spied earlier this morning? We’ve now spotted a lot more pictures of the thing — and its crimson slide-out keypad. Dubbed the BL42, it sports light-up nav buttons, a 240 x 320 screen, and what looks to be the same five megapixel camera found in its slightly taller brethren, specs that should allow it to slot quite neatly into the Chocolate lineup — at some indeterminate time and place in the future.

Coming off that epic BL40 tease, it’s hard to take something from the same company that looks like this very seriously — but hey, you’ve got to cover every market segment to be a global top-five manufacturer, and that’s exactly how LG rolls. The GB130 is an ultra-simple slider destined for the Russian market, featuring a 2-inch screen at 160 x 120 resolution, an integrated FM radio (conveniently accessed via a dedicated button), and 6.5 claimed hours of talk time. Look for it on your next trip to Moscow for 2,990 rubles (about $91).

For anyone firmly planted in the touch world, the N86 8MP may feel like a bit of a step backwards — but as non-touch Nokia smartphones go, the N86 8MP represents a new high end, outdoing the N85 and possibly beating the final nail into the coffin of the aging N95 series. The dual slider’s just been released over in the UK, and All About Symbian has done its typically fantastic job of breaking the phone down to the nitty gritty. Anyone used to the N95’s well-documented creakiness will be pleasantly surprised, as AAS reports that the N86 8MP is one of the most solid phones Nokia has made to date (they’ve been getting better for a while now, we’d say), though the added chunkiness over the N85 might be a big drawback for some — especially considering that it’s essentially the same phone as the older model other than the better camera and the active kickstand. In the final analysis, the camera output looks very good (though perhaps not quite as good as the variable aperture and Carl Zeiss optics had us hoping) and AAS comes away with the conclusion that it could be the “best device money can buy” — assuming, of course, that you’re cool with S60 3.2 and touch isn’t your bag.
Nokia N86 8MP reviewed, “arguably the best device that money can buy” originally appeared on Engadget Mobile on Wed, 24 Jun 2009 20:18:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

You’ve been able to find the Exclaim and Snap for a while now if you’ve dug through third-party retailers hard enough, but Sprint’s finally selling them directly from its own site. The Snap — which we’d already known would hit this week — is a portrait QWERTY handset running Windows Mobile 6.1 with support for HTC’s Inner Circle functionality to block out email noise when you feel like you’re about to lose your mind; it runs $149.99 on contract after rebate. The Exclaim is a low-cost QWERTY side slider designed to do battle with rival LG’s Rumor 2; it’ll set you back $79.99 on contract. Finally, the LX370 is a basic numeric slider with a 2 megapixel camera, running $99.99 with your name on the dotted line.
