Pioneering T-Mobile G1 owners have been enjoying the spoils of Android 1.5 (or Cupcake, as it’s known ’round these parts) for months now, but it looks as if that very treat will be the last taste of confectionery goodness that the smartphone gets. According to Android software engineer Dave Sparks, a time is soon coming when devs “wont be able to fit the latest [Android] release on the G1’s internal flash,” and yet another engineer has chimed in via Twitter to say that he “can’t promise” that any update after 1.5 will fit. For whatever reason, HTC gifted the G1 with an incredibly meager amount of internal flash, and considering that no Android phone will support app storage / loading from a microSD card, there’s no way to free up room for Donut, Eclair or Flan. You’ve been a real champ, G1, but without 2.0+, we just can’t give you the love and devotion you truly need. Go on, call us fickle — we deserve it.

At last, the much rumored Dell cellphone has made its first official appearance. The 3.5-inch 360 x 640 pixel device with capacitive touchscreen was on display in China running the Android-based Open Mobile System (OMS). The Mini 3i was on-hand as part of the launch of China Mobile’s new Application Platform that offers music, video, and app downloads to mobile phones from Nokia, Samsung, LG, and apparently, Dell. The candybar device lacks WiFi (or Chinese WAPI) and is strictly 2G GSM (no 3G) but does come with a 3 megapixel camera, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and 950mAh battery. Guess now we know why the early prototypes were met by a collective meh by mobile carriers earlier this year. No idea when this will ship but it looks China-bound for at least the near future. A few more pics after the break.

Well, would you look at that? With just five days to go before T-Mobile becomes the first carrier here in the States to offer up HTC’s Windows Mobile-equipped Touch Pro2, it seems the handset has found its way underneath an undiscriminating camera. There’s also a shot or two in the gallery that portrays the tilting / sliding handset alongside Samsung’s Behold, so be sure to give ‘em all a good look as you look for spare pennies in the run-up to August 12th. Oh, speaking of which, we’ve also got good reason to believe that it’ll launch for $299 on contract and $599 with no strings attached, so we hope you’re kosher with sizable premiums.

Hm, maybe Motorola should have stuck with the render a while longer, cause this first shot of the Verizon-bound Sholes Android smartphone is looking mighty rough. Of course, it is just a blurrycam leak, and there’s a chance we’re not seeing this set’s true beauty, but honestly, we’re not sure even the most loving press photographer can make that red D-pad attractive. We’ll find out soon enough, if things go as planned.

Well, at least some of the mystery is solved. If a machine translated source is to be believed — not to mention a healthy gathering of screengrabs — Philips’ elusive V808 smartphone will be a China Mobile exclusive. As with other Android-based phones on the operator, it’ll be the reworked OPhone OS handling the dirty work, which basically means a carrier-customized app market and a few other tweaks that seem to be frowned upon in the Chinese community. We’re also told that the phone will lack support for 3G, WiFi and multitouch, leaving us grieved, lugubrious and lachrymose. C’mon guys — why hamstring a good thing?

We’ll admit, we’re jealous of this Sina Corporation reporter, who appears to have gotten some hands-on time with LG’s very sexy Chocolate BL40 and its 21:9 aspect ratio screen. There isn’t much said here aside from details we already knew and the occasional compliment on its form factor and display, but it is good to see this in the wild and not just in the FCC’s secret lab facilities. Now if only we can get a better idea of its US 3G capabilities…

At this point we’re not sure why Dell won’t just come out and say it’s working on a smartphone, but for whatever reason the company’s executives keep hinting around it. Case in point: Dell consumer division VP Ron Garriques, who told analysts yesterday that the company would “work with the top three to four” carriers “and see what their needs are.” That’s only slightly more concrete that what we’ve been hearing Michael Dell say for a while now, but apparently Ron got a little more specific: reports from the event also say he indicated that plans are being drawn up to launch products in the US, Asia, and Europe. We’d love a full transcript to figure out exactly what went down, but remember that Mr. Garriques here is the ex-head of Motorola’s mobile devices unit, so he’s got some experience cranking out handsets for every market. Just a note, though, Ron: if you ever pull an Adamo on us and reveal a product without specs, you are so not invited to sit at our table for lunch anymore.

It’s bad enough picking up a virus because you’ve made an uncharacteristic (to you at least)
illegal software acquisition, but
bringing one
home when you’re just minding your own business, trying to enjoy your legitimate and hard-earned purchase, is
totally uncool. Case in point: according to Inside-Handy.de, a few unlucky customers of O2 in Germany have purchased the TG01 handset only to discover a virus present on the device. While Toshiba tries to determine the impact and the cause of the infection, O2 has halted sales of the smartphone, though there’s no word on when sales will resume nor if this infection has spread to other European nations.

Ah DigiTimes, what would a morning be without your rumors sourced from within Taiwan’s component suppliers? Today’s tattle has Acer launching its A1, C1/E1, F1, and L1 smartphones “at the end of September and in the fourth quarter” — that a four-month spread. Of these, the F1 running WinMo 6.5 (pictured above) on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform and A1 running Android are undoubtedly the most interesting. It’s just rumor but it does corroborate the hushed September whispers already heard.
