In its brief three-model run so far, HTC’s already built a storied history of odd color options for its Android phones: brown on the G1, “merlot” on the myTouch 3G, and now, a sublime pink for the Hero that we’re finally seeing in the wild. Love it or hate it, Android fans, be real with yourselves: if it was somehow the only Hero you had access to, you’d take it in a heartbeat.

Looks like Vietnam is the new place to be for early device leaks. A place where gadget-nerds are rapidly evolving extra digits to master their surplus of hi-tech gear — lucky bastages. As followup to its GSM-flavored Palm Pre scoop, site Tinh Te is once again showing off the HTC Click only this time, it’s a full-on video. The device sports some interesting graphics (likely customized by the owner) on the back, a microSD slot, 1100mAh battery, standard 3.5-mm headphone jack up top, camera (no flash), and of course, Android, “Donut” build 1.50.999.0 according to the device’s about page. Clearly, it lacks that swank SenseUI and the LCD is much smaller than the HTC Magic — indicators that the Click is very much HTC’s cheapo Android phone as previously rumored. See it in action just past the break.

For many (if not most) iPhone developers, the App Store’s overheated competition and bloated inventory have led to scorched-earth pricing that makes it virtually impossible to parlay mobile development into a valid for-profit business model without turning to subscriptions or in-app advertising. RIM’s tried to nip that behavior in the bud by capping the minimum sale price at $2.99, and it sounds like Microsoft feels the same way in light of the flowery, motivational language being thrown the way of developers at learning sessions ahead of the Marketplace’s launch. “I know, 99 cents is interesting — yes, consumers like to pay 99 cents for applications,” admits Microsoft’s Loke Uei, “but 99 cents, come on, I think your app is worth more than that.” You heard it straight from the horse’s mouth, people — your app is worth more than that. Ultimately, Uei says the goal is to set the bench higher by keeping low-quality apps out of the Marketplace, but to start out and beef up, they might consider taking all the crap they can get and worrying about stroking devs’ egos after the fact. If the store’s client app makes it easy enough to browse, search, and get to best-of-breed content, this point should be moot anyhow.

The Hero might not pack a 1GHz Snapdragon or anything awesome like that, but that’s no excuse for it to lag its older cousins in day-to-day use. Sure, you’ve got Sense on there — but HTC’s got to keep things snappy, particularly in light of how well TouchFLO 3D performs on the newest batch of devices. Fortunately, we’ve followed up with HTC in light of a recent SlashGear report that there’s fresh firmware on the way, and indeed, it’s been confirmed — details on the exact contents are sketchy at best, but we’re cautiously heartened by the “performance” part of the “performance improvements and bug fixes” statement we’ve received. We’ll see just how much better it gets.

Having created an aura of surreal creepiness around its handset, Palm seems ready to talk about the Pre’s features (not just its feelings) in its latest video ad. Whether the change is in response to viewer unrest or a natural progression of the advertising campaign is unknown. But if princess waiffy pants could send a calendar late notification while pulling into a downward facing dog, well, that would be an ad worth watching. Maybe next time. Check the latest after the break.

As anybody who lives in a mid-sized American city knows, the only good reason to contact the mayor’s office is to complain about something. Now Pittsburgh, which usually only graces this site when one of its universities develops a
robot or a
weapon of some sort, has put its own high-tech spin on this with iBurgh. Described by city councilman Bill Peduto as “the first mobile application for city government,” the app lets iPhone owners snap a picture of their favorite eyesore or attractive nuisance, attach a quick note, and send the geotagged information to the city’s 311 operators. Not only is this good for potholes and gridlocked traffic, but it’s sure to be a hit among rioting college students the next time the Steelers win some sort of big game — and if you don’t know what we’re talking about, just punch
+steelers +riot into Google. And then hit the read link to download for yourself.

Remember that nameless midrange flip from Nokia that the FCC outed complete with AT&T branding not long ago? Well, we’ve now got a name to put with the face: 6350. The good folks at the Bluetooth SIG have come through once again, revealing a picture — admittedly a small one — of the phone that we can safely identify as the same thing we’d seen getting FCC approval a little while back. We don’t have a launch date yet, but the SIG confirms that it’s an HSDPA-equipped piece with a 2 megapixel camera — in other words, nothing that’s going to knock your socks off, unless your socks are mysteriously knocked off by 2 megapixel cameras, in which case you need to check your socks.

It’s out with the old, in with the new over at Sony Ericsson as it tries to revamp both its image and its lineup in the face of stiff competition, weak financials, and an unfocused platform strategy. President Hideki Komiyama (pictured left) intends to retire at the end of the year, and stepping up to fill his shoes will be the current head of Ericsson Silicon Valley, Bert Nordberg (right). To get the dude up to speed, he’ll become co-president as of September 1 and take over sole control of the operation on October 15. Speaking of October 15, that’s also the date that Sir Howard Stringer — yes, the one and only chairman and CEO of Sony — will take over the chairmanship of Sony Ericsson’s executive board from outgoing Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg. Whether this signals a power shift in the joint venture from Ericsson to Sony is unclear, but they’ve specifically mentioned in a press conference today to announce the moves that they need to “address [their] smartphone weakness” — and yes, we’d agree. Do exactly that, Bert Nordberg.

When we asked how you’d
change Palm’s Pre, one group of respondants requested a virtual keyboard, a group that should really quit its bellyaching because the phone already has one… it just doesn’t offer any particularly useful keys. That’s changing thanks to the modders at
WebOS Internals, who are taking the control that pops up when you hit the “sym” key and expanding it to actually contain some symbols you might use more than once a week — like, you know, letters and jazz. They have a functional keyboard operational at this point that works in both phone orientations, but it’s still decidedly pre alpha, meaning only those whose delicate thumbs are blistering on the Pre’s soft, smooth, physical keys should even think about this modification right now. The team has made huge strides in just the past few days, though, so perhaps before the end of the month everyone can be soft-typing pain-free.
