You’d think the FCC would have legal clearance to reject this on humanitarian grounds.

Sony Ericsson selects next president, appoints Howard Stringer chairman of the board

Monday, August 17th, 2009

Filed under:

It’s out with the old, in with the new over at Sony Ericsson as it tries to revamp both its image and its lineup in the face of stiff competition, weak financials, and an unfocused platform strategy. President Hideki Komiyama (pictured left) intends to retire at the end of the year, and stepping up to fill his shoes will be the current head of Ericsson Silicon Valley, Bert Nordberg (right). To get the dude up to speed, he’ll become co-president as of September 1 and take over sole control of the operation on October 15. Speaking of October 15, that’s also the date that Sir Howard Stringer — yes, the one and only chairman and CEO of Sony — will take over the chairmanship of Sony Ericsson’s executive board from outgoing Ericsson CEO Carl-Henric Svanberg. Whether this signals a power shift in the joint venture from Ericsson to Sony is unclear, but they’ve specifically mentioned in a press conference today to announce the moves that they need to “address [their] smartphone weakness” — and yes, we’d agree. Do exactly that, Bert Nordberg.

Sony Ericsson Aino’s wireless headphones get FCC approval, Aino gets a user manual

Monday, August 10th, 2009

It isn’t every day that a phone includes wireless stereo headphones in the box — yes, that’s right, we said wireless — so when we saw the Sony Ericsson MH100 earn its FCC wings, we stood up and took notice. The MH100 is a color-coordinated A2DP clip-on with a 3.5mm jack and remote controls, making it the perfect complement to the Aino’s advanced multimedia capabilities (including PlayStation Remote Play support, if you recall), and it’s nice to know that you won’t have to shell out for one of these suckers on top of the untold hundreds of euro you’re dropping on the phone itself. Speaking of the Aino, though, maybe the more interesting find in the FCC filing is the inclusion of the phone’s user manual, where you can get the lowdown on Remote Play, the built-in Facebook client, and details on the interface for that glorious 8.1 megapixel cam. Actually, large portions of the draft manual seem missing or half-assed, so we’re guessing we’ll see this get a lot more interesting by the time they pack the phones for retail.

Youserbase reviews Sony Ericcson's Satio and Aino smartphones on video

Sony Ericsson has been teasing us with its hottest for some months now, the Satio (nee Idou) and the Aino, two media-heavy smartphones that are inching closer to international release. They still aren’t confirmed for American shores, but until then we can enjoy a series of lengthy videos covering the two courtesy of Youserbase. How lengthy? We’re talking almost 75 minutes of discussion and tentative fingering over nine parts, showing off nearly every nook and cranny of the phones’ (decidedly dark) user interfaces. While there aren’t any huge surprises here, the vids give good feel for the responsive performance of the UI — and of the occasionally not-so-responsive integrated browsers. We’ve included just the first two installments here after the break, but if you don’t have anything planned this morning feel free to click on through for the epic and sweeping series.

Sony Ericsson’s W508 coming in stunning Bob Sinclar bundle

Friday, August 7th, 2009

If you celebrate French DJ and producer Bob Sinclar’s entire catalog (and who doesn’t?), we’d like to direct your attention to a very special version of Sony Ericsson’s W508 Walkman clamshell that’s launching in “select European markets” this quarter. The aptly-named W508 Bob Sinclar Edition has the usual array of pack-ins that you expect from any self-respecting special edition — wallpapers, ringtones, themes, and a unique mega-colorful cover — but it also includes a copy of Sinclar’s latest album, Born In 69, right in the box. Of course, you’ll need to be cool with a QVGA display and 3.2 megapixel cam, but really, who needs 8 megapixels when you’re in the VIP section of a basically unlit club with French house music permeating your very core?

Sony Ericsson ‘Jalou’ next in company’s Symbian lineup?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

We’ve yet to see a Satio or XPERIA X2 or X3 at retail, but it looks like Sony Ericsson have yet another full touch phone in the works as it tries to revitalize and reinvent itself with a renewed focus on Android, Symbian Foundation, and Windows Mobile for its smartphone lineup. What we’re looking at here is claimed to be a spy shot of the Jalou — that’s a retail name, not a codename, by the way — which is said to run S60 5th Edition (just like the Satio) with WiFi, GPS, and some form of HSDPA on board. The Sony Ericsson fan base is pretty notorious for crafting beautiful, very believable concept devices using nothing more than Illustrator and an overactive imagination, so we’d urge caution here — but other than a display that seems to have been blacked out, it all seems believable enough. The bigger question might be whether the world’s ready for two Symbian-based touchscreen smartphones from Sony Ericsson in the next few months.

Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA X2 demoed on video

Monday, July 27th, 2009

You know what frustrates us? Someone with their hands on a totally sweet piece of gadgetry who clearly doesn’t know what to do with it. Such is the case in the video below, which seems to depict a gentlemen fondling Sony Ericsson’s next XPERIA installment, the X2. While there’s not much to see of the device itself, the phone is apparently running a fairly recent version of Windows Mobile 6.5, and the company has clearly taken its skinning team to parts of the OS, as the user in the video manages to stumble past some pretty magnificent looking UI trickery. It doesn’t seem as dressed up as the X1’s Panel interface does, though this likely isn’t the final product. Truck on after the break to see the X2 in action, and try to quell your anger as the phone is repeatedly put to sleep during the demo.

[Thanks, David]

Sony Ericsson "Twiggy" seems to leak into the wild

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Sony Ericsson has a world-renowned reputation for being unable to keep a lid on its stuff, and the trend appears to be continuing with the “Twiggy” — a phone that seems destined to replace the aging W350. This bad boy was actually first spotted way back in March — curiously leaked in Sony Ericsson’s own marketing materials, no less — but this time around it looks like we have a unit somewhere out there in the real wild (”IRL” as those particularly internet-savvy folks out there might say). No word on specs just yet; regardless, though, we’re just pleased to see that the company appears to still be committed to this niche form factor most manufacturers won’t touch with a ten-foot pole.

Sony investigating PSP phone?

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

As recently as May Sony has itself stated that a PSP phone “could happen,” and now a report from Nikkei business daily states that Sony is planning on putting together a team as early as next month to build product that would act as a combination of a PSP and a Sony Ericsson handset. It makes plenty of sense, both as a differentiation from Nintendo and as a confrontation of the looming iPhone threat — and hey, it might also act as a decent salve over the lukewarm reception of the pricey PSPgo. Unfortunately, if Sony is just about to get started on this, we likely wouldn’t be looking at any resulting product for a while to come. Sony declined comment according to Reuters, which doesn’t mean a whole lot, but it’s worth keeping in mind that we’ve been hearing this sort of rumoring since back when the N-Gage (as a product) was still almost relevant.

Sony Ericsson X1 and C510 launch on Rogers

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Better late than never, right? Some sixteen excruciating months after its announcement, Sony Ericsson’s WinMo superphone — the mighty XPERIA X1 — has finally come to Rogers as expected. Considering that the X1 is still very much one of the world’s premier smartphones (on paper, anyhow), the on-contract promotional price of CAD $249.99 after discounts seems reasonable enough — of course, whether you feel the same way after three years of mobile marriage is another story altogether. Staying within the Sony Ericsson realm, the C510 has also launched, an attractive candybar with 7.2Mbps / 2Mbps HSPA and a 3.2 megapixel cam; it’s all yours for CAD $79.99 on contract.
