We know of precisely two types of radios going into Heros (or would that be Heroes?) right now: the 900 / 2100MHz 3G for global use that everyone’s using so far, and an 850 / 1900 version for North America that the FCC’s had the pleasure of using. Well, you know how FCC labs work — they get to play with all the toys before anyone else does — and now they’re checking out another version of HTC’s latest and greatest Android device with CDMA / EV-DO. This lends near-infinite credibility to the buzz that Sprint’s signed up to launch the phone this fall, presumably around the same time it drops the InstinctQ from Samsung, at which point it’ll have both the QWERTY and full-touch Android angles covered. Options are good, are they not?

Going off mere clues, hypotheses and shreds of evidence, we’ve been trying to wrap our brains around the InstinctQ for a while now — and finally we’ve got a picture that firms everything up: it’s definitely an Android-powered landscape QWERTY slider for Sprint. We know the Hero’s in the pipeline, too, so between these two, Sprint could be poised to catch up to T-Mobile in a big, big way (as far as Android goes, anyhow) this fall. We think we’re digging the touch-sensitive Home, Menu, and Back buttons, and the expansive keyboard looks plenty usable. The screen isn’t looking quite as vibrant as its autobahn-driving European cousin, the Galaxy — but we’ll wait on passing final judgment until it’s in our hands, of course. Any chance that’s happening soon?
[Thanks, Justin]

They’ve taken their time, but Qwest is finally winding down its Sprint-based MVNO offering and kicking subscribers off the last shreds of its network over the next couple months. To be exact, every last customer will have be off the airwaves by October 31 — and to really drive the point home, outgoing calls will be rerouted to customer service for friendly reminders starting next month (don’t worry, you’re allowed to complete your call after the reminder’s over). The good news is that Qwest is waiving ETFs for folks porting away — they frickin’ better be — and the company has hooked up with Verizon as an affiliate, so you can still work with ‘em to manage your wireless life if you’re so inclined.

Studies just released by RBC Capital and ChangeWave Research polled iPhone 3GS and Palm Pre owners on their respective levels of satisfaction with their devices — then compared them. In the studies, 200 iPhone 3GS users and 40 Palm Pre owners were polled. Overall, 99 percent of Apple’s phone proclaimed themselves to be “satisfied,” while 82 percent of that number declared they were “very satisfied.” The poll of Pre owners showed that 87 percent are “satisfied,” and 42 percent of those owners describe themselves as “very satisfied.” Interestingly, the 42 percent of “very satisfied” customers are the highest score ever attained by a Palm device, and it’s a number that’s only ever been bested by RIM and Apple. When asked about their respective reasons for buying their devices, Palm Pre owners listed the touchscreen interface, ability to multitask, and ease of use in the top three, while iPhone users cite its touchscreen, ease of use and faster web browsing as its biggest draws. So what about drawbacks? iPhone users (a whopping 55 percent of them, in fact) say that AT&T’s network is their main gripe with the device, while Pre owners list short battery life and lack of third party apps as the devices biggest drawbacks. All in all, a pretty good showing for both — though the microscopic sample size (especially for the Palm Pre) makes us wonder about the validity of the findings a bit.

Everyone wants to be environmentally friendly — and really, it’s getting to the point where it’s outwardly irresponsible (and kinda stupid) if you’re not taking steps to reduce your footprint and help others do the same. Thing is, the impetus to take it easy on Mother Earth comes at precisely the same time that gadgets are playing a more important role in our lives than they ever have before, and historically, gadgets haven’t been perfect angels. Minerals needed in circuitry contribute to harsh mining operations, haphazardly discarded devices and batteries leave landfills toxic, and chargers blow through untold gigawatts in wasted power every year.

Palm’s slightly disturbing Pre ads continue to make news, putting to rest any doubts about their effectiveness. Hot on the heels of ad agency Modernista
totally loving that you’re “creeped out” by them, analyst
MediaCurves has done a little online study –”little” meaning a small sample group of only 305 viewers. Still, the results are interesting, with half of all respondents feeling inspired or happy after viewing the commercial, nine percent feeling disturbed. Sixteen percent were, however, confused, but that didn’t stop 21 percent from saying the commercial was “extremely effective,” and 46 percent indicating “somewhat effective.” At the read link you can watch the ad with a line graph drawn over it rating peoples’ interest realtime, generally going up when the phone is shown (the “bing, bing, bing” segment) and down the rest of the time, perhaps inspiring a new series of Pre adverts with more time for demos and less for dazed-sounding, tight-haired, 60-foot-tall women.

We’d just seen the m850 Dash earn its FCC wings earlier today, and now here it is again — this time in living color. Though we don’t know whether it’ll ultimately end up trading the Dash name we’ve heard so far for more familiar Instinct branding, it goes without saying that the new model is a spiritual member of the Instinct family, taking the curvy industrial design first seen in the s30 to another level. We’ll admit, it’s pretty — but as we’ve said before, it remains to be seen how relevant a phone like this will ultimately be in the face of Android-powered models from Sammy on Sprint in the same price range.

That slick, shiny, Instinct-ish m850 Dash that first broke on invisibleSHIELD’s site a few months back has been refreshed to the forefront of our memory today thanks to the good ol’ boys and girls at the FCC. We can’t really make anything of the filing beyond the fact that it’ll have EV-DO, Bluetooth, and WiFi (nice), but we did find it interesting that the Samsung dude working to get the phone approved specifically says “We’d appreciated [sic] it if you would issue Grants ASAP,” suggesting that someone — say, Sprint, for instance — is in a rush to get this puppy to market. With the s30 down below, the business case for the Dash (or whatever the go-to-market name ends up being) is a tricky one — especially with an onslaught of Android gear on the way from these guys — but we imagine they’ll sell a few.

We already knew the CDMA HTC Touch Pro2 headed to Telus and Verizon had been upgraded with a 3.5mm headphone jack, so it’s not a huge surprise that the Sprint version has one too, but it’s still nice to see proof. Still no word on a release date or pricing, but if these things are sneaking out there like this we can’t imagine we have long to wait.
[Thanks, Kenny]

We’ve seen more than enough evidence surface to convince us that HTC Touch Pro2 is making its way over to Sprint at some point, and now this morning comes two interesting piece of information each pegging a release date for early September. Only problem is, the pair can’t seem to agree on exactly what that day will be. Phone Arena’s gotten its hands on an alleged leaked document hailing straight from the Now Network that claims Thursday, September 3rd is the lucky day, while on the flip side, Engadget reader Louis wrote in to let us know of an apparent reply he got from Sprint customer service that told him it’d be up for sale on Tuesday, September 8th. That last one’s pretty peculiar, given the carrier’s yet to even confirm the device’s existence, but that hasn’t necessarily stopped blabbing reps before. With both of these days now less than a month away, chances are we won’t be waiting too much longer to know for sure.
