No, someone didn’t just Photoshop the
Duracell logo on a
WildCharge pad — this actually is the newest product from the ubiquitous battery maker. Available this October, myGrid kits (including charger and one power sleeve) will be available for Nokia, Motorola, and Blackberry handsets, as well as the many flavors of Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. No price yet, but you’ll know as soon as we do.

Now that Samsung’s standardized on the TouchWiz interface across its entire touchscreen line — dumbphone and smartphone alike — they’ve created a fertile playground that offers developers the opportunity to reach a good chunk of the world’s second largest phone manufacturer’s devices. A dedicated software development kit for TouchWiz is now available direct from Samsung, and since your average code monkey doesn’t necessarily have access to fifteen different phones running multiple versions of every platform Sammy supports, they’re also offering up their Virtual Device Lab that’ll let devs test their wares on everything the company has on tap. For distribution, Samsung will have a number of channels available: its Application Store, a new Widget Gallery that’ll premiere on Verizon’s Omnia II launching later this year, and — perhaps most tantalizingly for developers — the possibility of inclusion right in the frickin’ ROM if Samsung really loves what you’ve done. Considering that you’re targeting S60, WinMo, and a wealth of proprietary OS devices in one fell swoop, this could end up being a huge distribution channel.

It was over a year ago that UC Berkeley introduced the world to CellScope, the 60x microscope for cellphones made from cheap, off the shelf components (like a re-purposed belt clip). Now, even though we’re disappointingly still not seeing this thing in stores, there’s an upgraded version able to take pictures of even smaller nasties. Using a filter the scope can now spot microscopic critters tagged with dye that glows under fluorescent light — things like Mycobacterium tuberculosis (that’s the cause of TB if you, like us, lack a med degree). A software app is able to then count the number of cells within a given sample and tell you whether to worry about that annoying cough. There’s still no word on whether this product will ever actually start scoping out such things in the wild, but we certainly hope it will — if only so that we can keep our vast collection of cellphone accessories complete. Video after the break.

Well, that was snappy. Just days after O2 Germany abruptly halted the sales of Toshiba’s 1GHz TG01 smartphone due to an unexplained virus outbreak among new units, it seems as if things are back in gear. Online, anyway. As of this moment, web shoppers can order the Snapdragon / WinMo-powered from the carrier once more, though there’s no word on if retail shops are still keeping their stock in quarantine. Either way, we’d don a mask before waltzing in to inquire.
[Thanks, Fab]

We have zero solid info on this one — price, real pictures, or any sort of availability anywhere — so, don’t hold your (nicotine-riddled) breath waiting for the SB6309 Lighter Phone to show at an AT&T Store near you. Even so, a phone with a cigarette lighter built-in is too good not to mention. Flip it over, slide back the protective cover, and press your cancer stick onto the glowing square — and do it quick, because that can’t be doing anything good for battery life. An interesting product in these increasingly health-conscious times, sure to be a hit in Japan at least where about 30 percent of adults can’t get through the day without lighting up. That is, of course, assuming this thing is real. The pics are all renders, and its website seems to be laced with some sort of malware. Click on through to see another picture of its three available colors we’ve dubbed “Bloody Spittle,” “Burnt Tobacco,” and “Emphysema.” They’re viewable here without any risk of giving your machine any sort of respiratory distress, but if you really want to live life dangerously, copy/paste the URL after the break into the appropriately wide box in your browser.
[Thanks, Philip P.]

Say you’ve got a Pre and a Touchstone. Say, further, that you’ve got butterfingers — or maybe you just really can’t stand the thought of your glossy beauty being scratched beyond recognition by the occasional encounter with a lint ball in your pocket. Normally, the answer would be a case — but the Touchstone requires special handling since it needs contact with a non-slip back to stay firmly planted and deliver the wireless juice, so what’s a Pre user to do? The answer might just lie with accessory maker Seidio, which has released its $29.95 Innocase complete with the promise of Touchstone compatibility — no need to remove the phone to do your thing. You still need to have the Touchstone battery cover installed for the solution to work, but since it’s all concealed by the case anyway, who cares?

Remember that slightly stouter but still rather obelisky-looking Black Label cousin of LG’s BL40 we spied earlier this morning? We’ve now spotted a lot more pictures of the thing — and its crimson slide-out keypad. Dubbed the BL42, it sports light-up nav buttons, a 240 x 320 screen, and what looks to be the same five megapixel camera found in its slightly taller brethren, specs that should allow it to slot quite neatly into the Chocolate lineup — at some indeterminate time and place in the future.

At this point we’re not sure why Dell won’t just come out and say it’s working on a smartphone, but for whatever reason the company’s executives keep hinting around it. Case in point: Dell consumer division VP Ron Garriques, who told analysts yesterday that the company would “work with the top three to four” carriers “and see what their needs are.” That’s only slightly more concrete that what we’ve been hearing Michael Dell say for a while now, but apparently Ron got a little more specific: reports from the event also say he indicated that plans are being drawn up to launch products in the US, Asia, and Europe. We’d love a full transcript to figure out exactly what went down, but remember that Mr. Garriques here is the ex-head of Motorola’s mobile devices unit, so he’s got some experience cranking out handsets for every market. Just a note, though, Ron: if you ever pull an Adamo on us and reveal a product without specs, you are so not invited to sit at our table for lunch anymore.

Ah DigiTimes, what would a morning be without your rumors sourced from within Taiwan’s component suppliers? Today’s tattle has Acer launching its A1, C1/E1, F1, and L1 smartphones “at the end of September and in the fourth quarter” — that a four-month spread. Of these, the F1 running WinMo 6.5 (pictured above) on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform and A1 running Android are undoubtedly the most interesting. It’s just rumor but it does corroborate the hushed September whispers already heard.

First we’d heard that the InstinctQ for Sprint might be Android-based, but what other Google-rife gear does Sammy have up its sleeves? That SGH-T939 Behold2 spotted in the WiFi Alliance’s documents turns out to be Android-equipped without question, seeing how its user agent profile — found on Samsung’s own site — lists its browser as “Android Browser.” Sure, we suppose they could get all cute on us and name their random, featureless dumbphone browser “Android Browser,” but that trick would be mean beyond words — and we’re further encouraged by the fact that the screen size is listed as 480 x 320, exactly the resolution that the doctor ordered for Android action. There’s no word on when this is coming, but it goes without saying this’ll find its way to T-Mobile since that’s where you get the original Behold; unfortunately, the old model isn’t too ancient yet, so we wouldn’t be surprised if we were in for a bit of a wait.
