Typically, dual-mode global handsets on carriers like Sprint and Verizon have a distinctly high-end (or at least a midrange) flair to them, but the Escapade is rolling up on this scene to ask “why is that?” Verizon’s new Pantech-sourced clamshell — which will be sold under the Verizon name alone — lacks EV-DO, UMTS, and even EDGE data, concentrating instead on offering voice and text services in “220 destinations worldwide.” It’s got a 2 megapixel camera, support for voice commands, Bluetooth, and VZ Navigator, but the most compelling feature might be the price: $29.99 on contract after rebate. Look for it to launch online and in stores tomorrow.

They’ve taken their time, but Qwest is finally winding down its Sprint-based MVNO offering and kicking subscribers off the last shreds of its network over the next couple months. To be exact, every last customer will have be off the airwaves by October 31 — and to really drive the point home, outgoing calls will be rerouted to customer service for friendly reminders starting next month (don’t worry, you’re allowed to complete your call after the reminder’s over). The good news is that Qwest is waiving ETFs for folks porting away — they frickin’ better be — and the company has hooked up with Verizon as an affiliate, so you can still work with ‘em to manage your wireless life if you’re so inclined.

If you want to get in on the Glyde’s successor in the next few months, odds are good you’ll be asking for the Rogue when you mosey into the store. Actually, the odds are virtually 100 percent now that Verizon has actually kicked off the Rogue’s advertising campaign — despite the fact that the phone is yet to be announced. Whoopsie! If we had to guess, this is a sign that the phone’s announcement is imminent; last we’d heard it was on track for an August 23 launch, so we could definitely imagine a press release coming this week.
[Thanks, Adam]

Regardless of carrier, we know that these in-the-wild shots of the Touch Pro2 drive impatient buyers within an inch of madness, so we apologize in advance if this latest batch leads to any mental health facility commitments — but, you know, we’re just doing our job here. This time around, we get Verizon’s version of the phone pitted against a Sprint Touch Pro, starkly demonstrating that the new model is a good deal longer — something we hadn’t really considered. We also get a good look at the Device Information screen showing 86.85MB of free RAM and 230.69MB of free ROM, though we can’t say with certainty that the shot was taken on a bone-stock Touch Pro2 that was fresh out of the box, not to mention the fact that we could still see firmware revisions before it even hits the market. With global roaming capability, we bet this one’s going to be a hot seller in certain audiences — particularly those with far more business attire in their closets than ourselves.
[Thanks, morrowa2]

Big Red’s flexing its 4G muscle today, announcing that it has successfully completed the first true tests on its nascent LTE network — end-to-end data calls that presumably approximate real-world usage. The action actually happened way back on July 15 in Seattle, while Boston just went down today — the two markets where Verizon said it’d be running the first trials — both on 700MHz spectrum won not terribly long ago. LG and Samsung provided the mysterious, unspecified “trial devices,” but don’t worry, Motorola fans — Verizon says they’ve got devices in the pipeline as well. Both Seattle and Boston currently have ten LTE cell sites live as the carrier trudges toward a 2010 date with destiny when it’ll take “up to 30″ markets live, at which point EV-DO and HSPA will theoretically feel like trying to send packets via carrier pigeon. Progress!
Update: We just spoke with Verizon CTO Tony Melone to expand a bit on the trials. Here are some of the key takeaways:
- Though they’re not talking speeds with these trials specifically, they’re confident in saying that everything’s in line for 7-12Mbps down and 3-5Mbps up at launch.
- The trials are being conducted on commercial LTE base station hardware, but everything else is prototype (and changing very rapidly). The end-user equipment doesn’t currently resemble anything you’d actually buy.
- Data modems will be the priority at launch, which makes sense considering the amount of industry flux with regard to voice over LTE. Though Verizon believes the solution will ultimately be some form of VoIP, there are several outstanding issues, including handling of 911 calls.
- Everything in the trial so far leads Verizon to believe that they’re on track for a 30-market launch in 2010.
- This doesn’t spell the end of EV-DO deployments — far from it. Melone says that upgrades could continue all the way through to the initial LTE launch and beyond.

Looks like Verizon’s up to something (and we’re not talking about
Sholes). A quick trip over to VZW’s site has confirmed that $99 — and a two-year contract — will land you just about any smartphone that they offer (one notable exception being the Samsung Saga), including HTC’s Touch Pro and Touch Diamond. Could this mean that the new
Touch Diamond2 and Touch Pro2 are soon to rear their pretty little heads? We’d be down with that.

The word “Rogue” conjures images of awesome X-Men characters, small Nissan SUVs, and badasses who don’t take crap from nobody — but QWERTY sliders on Verizon? We’ll admit, we didn’t see that one coming. The would-be Glyde replacement is apparently lined up for a release date around the 15th of August, and we’re seeing it now for the first time in pristine press shots following some in-the-wild action early in the month. We can tell already that it’s going to be a better-looking phone than its predecessor, and the word on the street is that it works as good as it looks; if anything, it’s a shame they didn’t just go ahead and slap WinMo on here and call it an Omnia Pro. Can’t win ‘em all, we suppose.

On the lookout for the
Motorola / Android / Verizon trifecta, we dug up some handset renders over at motofan.ru that seem to fit the bill quite well, thank you. According to the site, “Sholes” is a 3.7-inch (480 x 854) touchscreen device that will make its debut in the U.S. in October, featuring: 512MB storage, 256MB RAM, support for microSD / microSDHC up to 16 GB (an 8GB microSD ships with the phone), a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and the expected connectivity (USB, Bluetooth 2.0, WiFi), audio, and video formats. And if the translation wasn’t hopelessly garbled, the source is also saying that this bad boy will support both CDMA and EVDO Rev A . No word on a price yet, but if this phone does make it to the realm of the real it’ll be nice to see a Moto / Android device that doesn’t look like it belongs in the hands of a tweenage girl (yeah, we said it,
Morrison). See for yourself after the break.

Verizon’s going full-force on its effort to roll out a be-all, end-all app store to its customers, starting with its Verizon Developer Community conference held in San Jose this week where devs schmoozed with carrier peeps, APIs were exchanged, and hands were shaken. Folks submitting apps will be looking at a 70 / 30 revenue split with freebies also allowed, but the real news might be the amount of firepower Verizon’s bringing to the table. The carrier used the conference to introduce the members of its Developer Advisory Board, including eleven firms ranging from Capcom and EA to Slacker to PacketVideo — heavy-hitters who probably know a thing or two about developing and distributing quality apps across multiple platforms. They’ve got the right idea there, but with platforms and carriers both desperately fighting for app attention right now, it still seems like there are going to be way too many cooks in the proverbial kitchen going into 2010.
