After years of wrong turns, it looks like Garmin-Asus’s nuvifone has finally found its way to a US provider, with two separate sources claiming the nav-enabled handset will be coming to AT&T, and soon. This falls in line with earlier indications that it would be making a slight left turn onto American streets in Q4, and will mark the end of a tortuous journey to retail. Both the G60 with its homemade OS and the Windows Mobile M20 are said to be inbound, meaning you’ll still have a choice to make even if you choose one of these. No confirmation from AT&T just yet, naturally, but we’ll keep you posted.

HTC’s making some serious moves in North America at the moment — not to say that’s necessarily anything new — and the Touch Diamond2 and Pro2 are both getting love from every angle. That’s a good thing, we figure — and the parade of high-end Windows Mobile hardware continues with the Whitestone, a presumed Diamond2 variant with a 3.6-inch WVGA display and 5 megapixel cam. Test documents confirm that it’s CDMA / EV-DO, though we’re not seeing any evidence of GSM; that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not there since the FCC doesn’t care to test non-US bands, but we definitely expected to see a full report on EDGE 850 / 1900. Now that the approval’s in, Verizon, it’s your move — let’s get the ball rolling, shall we?

Followers, fans, and casual observers of HTC alike all know that when the company launches a new landscape QWERTY model, it’s a big deal. In fact, it’s more than a big deal — it’s a Big Deal. Many describe it as the ultimate smartphone form factor, the perfect execution of everything a modern handset is capable of doing — and realistically, no company has as much experience or know-how at making powerhouse landscape QWERTY sliders than HTC does.
That’s why droves of subscribers on virtually every carrier are on the edge of their seats awaiting the Touch Pro2’s release. Whether you love, hate, or feel nothing but pure, unadulterated ambivalence toward Windows Mobile, it’s hard to argue that the Pro2 isn’t a gorgeous smartphone at a distance, and T-Mobile USA’s gently-tweaked version is no exception. Unless you’re desperate for SLR-quality photography (which you’re frankly not going to get regardless of what phone you buy), the spec sheet reads like a dream — an expansive 3.6-inch WVGA display, full QWERTY, tilt-up display, all the 3G and WiFi you could ever want, and HTC’s latest and greatest build of TouchFLO 3D constantly working to make sure that WinMo cleans up nice — but is it true love or just lipstick on a pig? Let’s have a look.

It’s been a hot minute since we first laid eyes on
those WinMo screen grabs featuring big ol’ buttons at the bottom of the display — signaling, we hoped, an all-around effort to minimize stylus use in the mobile OS — and now we have a video for you that seems to further make the case. While WinMo 6.5 build 23022 is still pretty clumsy, those finger-friendly (well, at least, “finger-friendlier,” or maybe “not as finger-hostile”) buttons grace the bottom of the display, and there is an iPhone-esque magnifying glass option for zooming in on and editing text. Technical details for this build are available at the read link — but first, make sure you peep the thing in action at the break.

Remember that pretty Windows Mobile 6.5-ish skin for AT&T’s Warhawk (a.k.a. HTC Touch Diamond2) we saw last week? Looks like it (or another very similar skin) is ready to make another appearance. The Inquirer managed to get a walkthrough of what’s being called the final build of WinMo 6.5, and while there isn’t a lot of new functionality shown — large portions of the video are devoted to My Phone syncing and QR codes — we do get to seem a few Zune inspired ideas and a brief glimpse of how it handles flash. It’s still on track for release by Christmas, and if you want your glimpse now, check out the video after the break.

We know what’s in the pipe for the next generation of TouchFLO 3D — but what about TouchFLO 2D, the lightweight version of HTC’s WinMo skin currently employed in devices like the low-end Touch Viva? For the answer to that, we need look no further than an alleged leaked ROM for the upcoming Mega, which appears to have revealed a treasure trove of heretofore-unseen goodies. TouchFLO 2D 2.0 looks, dare we say it, damn near as pretty as its higher-end 3D counterpart — and conveniently, you can get this up and running right now if you’ve got a QVGA set running a leaked 6.5 ROM. We know you’re a risk-taker if you’re running 6.5 code right now, so you may as well give this a shot too, right?

At a glance, Samsung’s recently-announced Omnia Pro B7610 seems like a sweet hunk of Windows Mobile love — especially if you’re cross-shopping it with the Touch Pro2 — but is there more than meets the eye? GSMArena recently put a prerelease unit through its paces, and it’s not a perfect situation by any stretch; first off, apparently not very pretty in the flesh, owing in part to its girth and in part to the weird red battery cover. The resistive touchscreen isn’t great and the OLED display washes out in sunlight (as they typically do), but on the plus side, the QWERTY keyboard is said to be stellar and it seems that Sammy’s done a great job of completely concealing WinMo 6.1’s sad, sagging skin with TouchWiz. In the final analysis, the site concludes that the phone easily matches the high bar set by the Touch Pro2 — strong words considering HTC’s market dominance and the fact that we’re still looking at a prototype Omnia Pro here, so this should get even more interesting.

There’s always been a little chunk of softness in our cold, stone hearts for candybar QWERTY handsets. Stylus interaction? Not so much. That’s why it’s a little disappointing to see HP’s upcoming iPAQ K3 Obsidian handset for AT&T show up with a stylus on board, despite the initial leaked documents we saw that clearly stated otherwise. Still, it’s nice to see how Windows Mobile 6.5 can operate under such conditions, and the 2.43-inch screen is OLED, even if it’s restricted to a mere QVGA resolution. It appears that a scroll wheel does the duty of shuffling through that honeycomb menu. As far as we know, we’re still looking at a November release.

This is all pretty well unsubstantiated at this point, but evidence is building that HTC has a couple heretofore-unknown codenames in the works — Leo and Mega — that are being prepped to help usher in the wide world of Windows Mobile 6.5. Contrary to what its name might suggest, Mega might be the weakling of the pair, rocking a mere QVGA display, which as far as modern WinMo sets go, is pretty much the only spec we need to know to put us to sleep. The Leo, though, might be a far more serious device, likely moving up to wide VGA; furthermore, information gleaned from the leaked TouchFLO 2.5 build suggests that it supports OpenGL ES 2.0, which would demand a high-potency core like Snapdragon. It’s actually all starting to sound a little bit like Firestone, but given the sheer quantity of phones HTC produces, we wouldn’t put it past ‘em to be hard at work at several Snapdragon-powered phones with virtually identical specs right now, possibly with different markets in mind.

Mac users, rejoice — well, the BlackBerry users in the lot of you, anyway. RIM’s been infamous over the years for all but ignoring Mac support for its devices, throwing out the occasional bone like Media Sync, but they’re now going big with a full-fledged Desktop Manager supporting Mac OS 10.5.5 and above when it launches… sometime. The big sticking point right now is that RIM isn’t talking about an availability date, all we know is that it’ll happen some time in September — but when that date comes, you’ll have a suite that’s able to sync iTunes, add and remove apps, perform firmware updates, create backups and restore from them, and manage multiple BlackBerrys at the same time. Nokia, maybe you guys want to take note here?
